Remembering ‘Mr. Western’: Memorial Service for Lee Robertson

In the bustling city of Bowling Green, a large gathering is expected as residents gear up to bid farewell to a local legend, Lee Robertson, fondly referred to as ‘Mr. Western’.

Roberson, known for his flair in men’s golf and unmatched passion for his alma mater, passed away at 102. A memorial service is set for Sunday, July 28, at State Street United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Everyone who knew Robertson and loved him — fellow Hilltoppers, family, friends — are welcome to attend and pay their final respects.

Born and raised in Bowling Green, Robertson left his mark not just in sports but also in the hearts of those who knew him. His endearing reputation as ‘Mr. Western’ stemmed from his lifelong love and commitment to his alma mater, Western Kentucky University.

Robertson is survived by his wife, Joyce Robertson, two children, Melenda R. Bower and Steve B. Robertson, three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. His loss sent waves of sorrow through a community that cherishes his contributions to sports, education, and local life.

Following the memorial service, there will be a gathering to celebrate Robertson’s life at the Eva and Jim Martens Alumni Center located within the heart of the city. For those wishing to honor a legacy that spans more than a century and encompasses heartfelt dedication to sport, academia, and community development, this gathering will commence at 3:30 p.m. in the aptly named Lee Robertson Ballroom.

Robertson’s name and legacy extend beyond his lifetime through the Lee Robertson Scholarship Fund. Established to assist one outstanding WKU junior who embodies the core characteristics of a Hilltopper – energy, dedication and spirit – this fund is a poignant way to honor Lee’s memory. Memorial gifts are being accepted, which can be directed to either State Street United Methodist Church or to the scholarship fund directly.

Folks wanting to honor Robertson’s legacy are also invited to share special memories, stories, or simple messages of condolences here.

Honoring A Local Legend

In summary, the upcoming memorial service represents more than just the passing of a local sportsman; it’s an opportunity for the residents of Bowling Green to remember and honor a man who truly defined the spirit of their city – Mr. Western.
