The WKU women’s basketball team started their season on a positive note as they celebrated a resounding 104-49 victory against the Kentucky State Thorobreds on Saturday evening at E.A. Diddle Arena. With this win, the Lady Toppers improve their record to 2-0 while Kentucky State falls to 0-2.
The game kicked off with a bit of back-and-forth action; however, it didn’t take long for the Lady Toppers to assert control. At the 6:16 mark of the first quarter, WKU launched a 7-0 run, marking their first double-digit lead of the game. The Thorobreds attempted to close the gap with a three-pointer, but WKU quickly responded, and by the end of the first quarter, they held a comfortable 27-14 lead.
The second quarter saw WKU truly find its rhythm, outscoring Kentucky State 31-11 and heading into halftime with an impressive 58-25 advantage. It was clear that the Lady Toppers weren’t just playing for the scoreboard; they were focused on building team chemistry and improving their gameplay.
After halftime, the Lady Toppers continued their strong performance, outscoring the Thorobreds 17-6 during the first five minutes of the third quarter. Kentucky State managed to rally with an 11-2 run towards the end of the quarter, but this merely served as a momentary blip for WKU. They quickly found their groove again and unleashed a stunning 17-0 run to kick off the fourth quarter, silencing Kentucky State until a free throw came at the 4:06 mark.
