On Thursday night, a Bowling Green resident, Pamela Lessenberry, was enjoying a peaceful dinner at her home. As she sat comfortably on her sofa, an unsuspecting sound stemmed from her kitchen around 8:30 p.m. recounting, she said, “I heard the reindeer bells on my back door.”
To her astonishment, there was a stranger standing in her kitchen. In the heat of the moment, she grabbed the first thing within her reach – a wine bottle. “I did think to get a bottle and I grabbed it and I charged at him. He was standing right there in my kitchen. Some stranger, right? So I screamed at him, held the bottle back,” Lessenberry said.
As she pointed her makeshift weapon towards the intruder whilst screaming, the man approached her. As she raised her bottle ready to strike, the intruder backed away and fled through the door.
Four years prior to this incident, Lessenberry had encountered a similar situation when an intruder attempted to break in through her front entrance. Recalling the earlier incident, she said, “I heard somebody wildly banging at the front door this time, not the back, and went to the door and it was someone another young man with wild, crazy hair. And he was screaming at me to let him in.”
This time again, Lessenberry was able to drive the intruder away by yelling at him to leave. However, she saw him return and forcefully kick the door, causing the entire door lock to shift. This incident had quite shaken her.
Having had such a horrifying experience earlier, Lessenberry felt she was oddly prepared this time. “I was kind of ready for it I guess, I didn’t know I was, but I was,” she said. Although she was able to fend off the intruder, the traumatic experience has left her feeling insecure and anxious.
After the intruder had fled from her home, Lessenberry reported the incident to the police. The whereabouts of the man who broke into her house are not yet known and no one was harmed in the process.
Through her experience, Lessenberry hopes to warn others about home safety. Always check the doors and windows are firmly locked, especially during the evening and night hours. It is always invaluable to have some form of defense mechanism.
The takeaway from Lessenberry’s encounter is that we should never take our home’s security for granted, continuously reminding ourselves to stay alert, cautious, and prepared for any potential threats.
