Bowling Green, KY is buzzing with excitement as the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) has officially sanctioned Girl’s and Boy’s Lacrosse for the upcoming 2024-25 school year! This means that lacrosse, which has skyrocketed in popularity across the state, will officially transition from a club sport to an officially recognized spring sport.
Lacrosse has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Kentucky, and it’s easy to see why. Combining elements of soccer and football, it offers an exhilarating mix of speed, skill, and teamwork. For many players, the sport is not just about the game, but also about the lessons in leadership and athleticism that come along with it. Bowling Green has three active high school lacrosse teams: Bowling Green High School, Greenwood High School, and South Warren High School. The excitement couldn’t have been higher when the boys’ teams recently held scrimmages against one another, scrumptiously setting the stage for future competitions.
In addition to the high school teams, there’s also a palpable buzz surrounding the women’s scene, particularly as the WKU women’s lacrosse team prepares to face off against the University of Kentucky (UK) women’s team. With this kind of activity, the sport is blossoming right before our eyes!
As Kentucky pushes forward, the emphasis on nurturing a knowledgeable officiating crew is also gaining importance. Current and aspiring referees are diving into workshops to hone their skills to uphold the game’s safety and integrity. This initiative aligns with hopes to grow a vibrant lacrosse community throughout the state. The goal? Establishing lacrosse programs in every middle school and high school in Kentucky!
Parents and athletes alike can mark their calendars, as the **official start** of the lacrosse regular season will commence on March 2. The first boys’ lacrosse games for Greenwood High School will kick off on March 4, followed by Bowling Green on March 15, and South Warren on March 22. As for the girls, they won’t be waiting long either, with matches scheduled for March 15 at Greenwood, March 17 at Bowling Green, and the South Warren home game hitting the calendar on March 24.
What’s more, the excitement doesn’t just end with the start dates; tournament play is slated from May 11 through May 24, allowing players to showcase their skills in competitive settings before the summer rolls in.
