Passionate Advocacy Group Fights for Abortion Rights in the Heart of Bowling Green, Kentucky
Bowling Green, Kentucky – Advocates for the Kentucky Reproductive Freedom Fund (KYRFF) are making their voices heard across Kentucky. Presently, they are on a trip across the Bluegrass State, advocating for access to abortion rights and making passionate pleas for lawmakers to reinstate these rights throughout the state.
As part of the advocacy campaign, a mobile billboard stating, “Kentucky’s abortion ban is driving away doctors,” was observed in front of the Warren County courthouse. The group, including medical professionals and religious leaders, took this opportunity to share their insights on the current state of abortion access in Kentucky.
Abortion laws in Kentucky are among the strictest in the United States, eliminating access except in extremely rare instances to save the mother’s life. Nonetheless, even these situations are rarely acted upon, resulting in Kentucky having the second-highest maternal mortality rate in the country.
One of the guest speakers at the campaign stop was Dr. Janet Wygal, a respected OB-GYN with an impressive 43-year career in Kentucky. She shared her firsthand experience of the shock that rippled through her patients and colleagues when Roe v. Wade’s decision was reversed. She stated, “Devastation. Disbelief that something that had been present for 50 years could be overturned was just horrifying, and the implications and the fallout is just never-ending.” Dr. Wygal’s sentiments echoed among the gathered crowd.
Lifelong Kentuckians and future medical professionals are now considering practicing medicine elsewhere, where they can provide comprehensive healthcare for their patients. As Lilly Deljoo, a medical student from the University of Louisville, put it, “We really have to think about not just our four years of residency, but our whole career.”
Religious leaders like Rev. Diane Snowa, a retired pastor from the United Church of Christ, challenged the notion that religion supports abortion bans. She strongly believes that bans actually abuse the teachings of religious texts. To quote Snowa, “Using scripture, especially using Jesus to limit and ban abortion is a travesty. The ministry of Jesus attempted to free women from whatever oppression they were suffering.” Snowa’s words highlighted the need for a compassionate dialogue on abortion.
The group plans to keep up its mission, targeting rural communities for education outreach and installing billboards where possible. In their quest for change, they aim to pressure lawmakers to reinstate abortion access throughout the state.
