Basketball fans in a college arena celebrating a new team commitment

News Summary

Local talent Julius Thedford commits to join the Memphis Tigers basketball team for the 2025-26 season. After a strong performance at WKU, he returns home to his roots, igniting excitement among fans. Despite a recent injury setback, Thedford’s impressive stats and contributions to the team demonstrate his potential to shine in Memphis. He joins a series of new commitments, creating anticipation for the upcoming season under coach Penny Hardaway.

Memphis Welcomes Home Julius Thedford: A Tiger in the Making!

In a thrilling turn of events, the city of Memphis is buzzing with excitement as local basketball talent Julius Thedford has officially chosen to join the Memphis Tigers for the upcoming 2025-26 season. On April 14, 2025, Thedford shared his commitment on Instagram, confirming his return home after a stint at Western Kentucky University (WKU).

High Hopes for a Memphis Native

Standing at a solid 6-foot-4, Thedford is a guard who has shown great promise on the court. Before making waves at WKU, he carved out an impressive high school career, showcasing his skills at both Whitehaven and Cordova. Fans are hoping to see him bring that talent back to his roots with the Tigers.

A Bright Start and Unfortunate Setback

During his freshman year at WKU, Thedford put up some notable stats, averaging 12.4 points and 3.8 rebounds across the first 18 games. He secured six starting positions and quickly made his mark by being named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team and earning two Freshman of the Week honors.

Tragically, Thedford’s momentum was halted due to a gruesome injury. On January 18, 2025, he dislocated his kneecap and tore a ligament during a game against Middle Tennessee, leading to an end of season for him. Despite this setback, his performance prior to the injury was impressive. He shot an extraordinary 42.8% from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc.

Highlight Reels from His Freshman Year

Thedford had some unforgettable performances, scoring in double figures 13 times during his freshman campaign. His season-high of 19 points against Marshall was a crowd favorite, and he also wowed spectators with 18 points in a fierce match at Kentucky and 11 points in games against Michigan and Wichita State.

A Steady Stream of Commitments

Thedford’s decision is just the latest in a series of exciting commitments for the Memphis Tigers this offseason. Also joining the ranks is Ashton Hardaway, who announced his decision to return home after playing at Saint Mary’s, and Quante Berry, a guard transferring from Temple.

Looking Ahead: Coach Penny Hardaway’s Plans

Head coach Penny Hardaway is gearing up for an action-packed season, as he has at least five scholarships available to fill. Returning players like PJ Haggerty, Dante Harris, and Bouna Kebe are also set to contribute to the upcoming roster. The addition of incoming freshman Daniel Vieira-Tuck and junior college transfer Felipe Patino adds to the growing anticipation for the Tigers.

What’s Next?

As the deadline for Division I players to enter the transfer portal approaches on April 22, 2025, and the regular signing period kicks off from April 16 to May 21, fans are eager to see how Coach Hardaway will complete his team.

With Julius Thedford home and ready to don the Memphis jersey, the future looks bright for the Tigers. Stay tuned as this talented squad gears up for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead!
