Bowling Green is in mourning as it bid farewell to a beloved community member, James Allen “Jim” Williams, who passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, at the age of 85. His family, friends, and all who had the joy of knowing him remember Jim as a man of kindness, dedication, and love.
Born in Vernon, KY, Jim was the son of the late Hubert and Nelda Marie Branstetter Williams. He grew up in the charming town of Smiths Grove, where his roots ran deep. Throughout his life, he was known for his warm smile and compassionate heart. Jim’s family notes with fondness that he was preceded in death by his brother, David Williams, and niece, Kami Ramsey, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of many.
Jim dedicated many years of his life to public service as a retired letter carrier. His work didn’t stop there; he also served as a representative of the National Association of Letter Carriers, advocating for the rights and welfare of his fellow mail carriers. His commitment to service extended beyond his profession as he was a valued member of Greenwood Park Church of Christ and an active participant in the city-county Planning Commission of Warren County. Jim’s heart was always in the community.
A sports lover at heart, Jim was deeply involved in both college and high school athletics. His passion for sports brought him joy, and he was often seen cheering on local teams, engaging with the community, and supporting young athletes in their endeavors. His enthusiasm for sports created bonds among friends, family, and neighbors, making him a cherished figure in Bowling Green.
Family was everything to Jim. He is survived by his loving wife, Kitty Wells Williams, and his four children, comprising three daughters—Natalie Williams, Kristina Wise, and Cherie Hampshire (married to Scott)—and one son, Nathan Williams (married to Amanda). Jim cherished his role as a father and was also a proud grandfather to four wonderful grandchildren: Austin Wise (married to Ellesse), Shelby Wise, Christopher Monticelli (married to Chelsea), and Joey Monticelli (married to Michelle). His family expanded further with the joyful arrival of four great-grandchildren. Jim’s brothers, Johnny Williams (married to Beth) and Mark Williams, also carry on his legacy.
As friends and family gather to celebrate Jim’s life, a funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at the Smiths Grove Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Bowling Green Special Olympics, American Cancer Society, or the National Kidney Foundation. These contributions will continue Jim’s legacy of compassion and support for those in need.
Bowling Green will undoubtedly miss Jim Williams, but his spirit will forever shine through the love he spread, the friendships he formed, and the family he nurtured. A true community heart, Jim made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
