WCPL Manager Explains the Importance of Public Libraries; Summer Programs Offered to Kids and Families
Bowling Green’s Welcoming Communities
Public libraries like the Warren County Public Library (WCPL) play a fundamental role in creating welcoming communities for every single person in the area by providing free access to resources, entertainment, and information. WCPL has branches spread across the county, including at The Capitol, the Parker-Bennett Community Center, The Foundry, and even inside the Michael O. Buchanon Park tennis facility.
Laura Beth Fox-Ezell, WCPL Executive Program Manager, explained the critical part libraries play in local communities. “We reinforce equitable access to resources and entertainment, but also create a sense of community for folks in a gathering place of information and literacy,” – said Fox-Ezell, “We want you here, we want to serve you, and we’re excited that you walk through our doors every single day.”
Public Libraries: A Third Space
Libraries are often referred to as a ‘third space’ – a place anyone can visit without any obligation to make a purchase. From programs to books, seeds for planting at home, or even toys for kids, WCPL offers a diversity of resources designed for every resident. The idea of a library as a third space underscores its role as a democratic and open institution where “there’s no expectation.”
Summer Programs for Kids and Families
Ensuring learning extends beyond the walls of schools, WCPL offers several programs and summer camps. One of the highlights of their summer offering is the Reading Road Trip map. With this fun and interactive program, children, teens, and adults can follow a map that leads them across the county to various landmarks. Each location represents a milestone corresponding to books read or activities completed, providing a fun and engaging incentive to go on a literacy journey.
Mobile Programs and Partnerships
Recognising the barriers some residents might have in visiting their local branch, WCPL has developed innovative mobile programs. Teams venture out into the neighborhoods, bringing the library experience – games, literacy activities, and more – directly to the people. WCPL has also partnered with Warren County Parks and Recreation to provide family day camps and free movie screenings, ensuring continuous engagement throughout the week.
Combating the Summer Slide
Fox-Ezell touched on the data showing children experience a “summer slide” in learning when schools break for summer. The goal of WCPL’s summer programs is to combat this trend by fostering ongoing literacy and community involvement.
