The vibrant city of Normal, Illinois, is buzzing with excitement as the Illinois State Redbirds gear up to kick off their 124th baseball season on February 14, 2025. Fans can hardly wait for the action to begin as the Redbirds will face off against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in an electrifying four-game series!
Under the leadership of head coach Steve Holm, the team has shown a knack for starting strong. Did you know that the Redbirds are 5-1 in season openers since Holm took the helm? That’s a solid track record! In fact, Illinois State has managed to win four of their last five season openers, proving that they know how to kick things off with a bang.
2025 marks a milestone as it brings the earliest Opening Day for Illinois State since 2015. It’s not just the fans who are excited; players are surely counting down the days to take the field. Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Kentucky, will be the battleground for these thrilling matchups.
In his seventh season with Illinois State, coach Steve Holm holds a 136-157 record. It’s all about building on the past and looking toward the future! Across the diamond, Western Kentucky’s coach Marc Rardin enters his third season with a commendable 69-48 record. It’s clear both teams are hungry for victories!
Last year the Redbirds tallied a solid 30-27 record and made their fourth appearance in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament under Holm. There’s a lot to be optimistic about as the team returns 20 players this season, including 12 pitchers! In addition to the returning squad, the roster has been bolstered with the addition of eight freshmen and 10 transfers.
Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers had a strong campaign in 2024, finishing with a 36-22 record, which earned them a spot in the Conference USA Championships for the second consecutive year. They are not to be underestimated, especially with key players like right-handed pitcher Dawson Hall and outfielder Ethan Lizama making the CUSA Preseason All-Conference Team’s cut. In fact, Western Kentucky is ranked third in the CUSA Preseason Poll!
The upcoming series on February 14 promises excitement as it marks the 27th meeting between ISU and WKU. The Redbirds have notable players to keep an eye on, including Judah Morris and Daniel Pacella, who are poised to make their mark on the field.
As if the opening weekend wasn’t enough, the Redbirds will also take on SIUE on February 18, 2025, before heading to Jacksonville for a three-game series from February 21-23, 2025. And don’t forget, Illinois State will be hosting the MVC Championships from May 20 to May 24, 2025—a perfect opportunity for fans to rally together and cheer for their team!
