Over 850 middle and high school students from all corners of Kentucky arrived at the Downing Student Union to dive into a day filled with exploration, inspiration, and creativity.

Interactive Learning at Its Best

The festival, organized by WKU’s Center for Gifted Studies, showcased a harmonious blend of speaker sessions and engaging, hands-on activities that exposed students to a wide array of career fields. Imagine stepping into a world where testing your skills on a flight simulator or building structures with foam blocks could shape your future choices!

Attendees had the chance to listen to experts from various industries, including a senior manager at Ancestry and a film producer, who shared their journeys and insights. The stimulating atmosphere allowed young minds to connect with real-world professionals and start thinking about their own aspirations.

Exploring Career Paths with Fun Activities

The workshops and booths were a hit among the attendees! For instance, Dr. Michael Killen from the WKU Department of Biology drew students in as he enthusiastically explained the wonders of synthetic cadaver organs. Seventh-grader Logan Phillips was seen eagerly testing out weather instruments, working hard to extinguish candles at the WKU Meteorology Department booth.

Younger students also found joy in learning—third grader Parker Cannon had an unforgettable time interacting with neuroscience readers at the Biology booth. For those who have a creative flair, local artist Andee Rudloff guided engaged students in painting parts of a colorful mural, while others were busy programming robots at the Kentucky Science Center’s booth.

Hands-On Experiences that Ignite Curiosity

The amazing hands-on experiences didn’t stop there. In one corner, students constructed structures at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s booth, while Aviation Heritage Park Board Member Bob Pitchford introduced students to the thrill of using a flight simulator. In another part of the venue, sustained oohs and aahs echoed as young learners used 3D printing pens at the Center for Gifted Studies booth, creating their own designs and visions.

For the budding medical minds, the University of Kentucky’s College of Medicine Bowling Green campus booth featured an anatomy figure that allowed students to examine and get a taste of medical hands-on learning. The excitement was palpable with every new discovery!
