Bowling Green, Kentucky – An exciting event unfolded on March 12, 2025, as over a hundred enthusiastic high school students gathered for the Future Healthcare Heroes Camp at the Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC). This event was tailor-made for freshmen and sophomores from various local high schools keen on exploring potential careers in the booming healthcare field.
The primary aim of the camp was to give students a taste of various healthcare training programs offered at SKYCTC. And boy, did they get the chance to jump right in! Participants had the chance to roll up their sleeves and engage in a mix of practical activities that not only made the day fun but also educational. From nursing simulations to surgical technology, the activities were as diverse as they were informative.
Students from Hart County High School kicked off their day by taking vital signs on dummy patients in the nursing simulation lab. These activities aren’t just fun and games; they’re serious business aimed at building the foundational skills necessary for any aspiring nurse.
The excitement continued in the respiratory therapy lab, where Keaunae Christon, a freshman from Warren Central High School, learned the fascinating skill of intubating a medical dummy. Guided by Clinical Instructor Blake Brown, students got to see firsthand what it takes to ensure patients can breathe properly in emergencies.
The surgical technology lab was also buzzing with activity. Students from Greenwood High School were captivated as they examined the placenta of a pregnant medical dummy, gaining valuable insights into prenatal care. Not only did they get the chance to handle various surgical tools, but they also practiced scrubbing in for surgery—crucial skills for any future surgical tech.
Meanwhile, students from Hart County High School pieced together a medical skeleton in the biology lab, a perfect exercise to understand human anatomy. Knowing how our bodies are structured is key for anyone considering a career in healthcare.
The excitement didn’t stop there. Students from Warren East High School tested pH levels in urine samples in the microbiology lab, a fantastic hands-on opportunity to connect chemistry to real-world applications in healthcare.
In the respiratory therapy lab, Christine SienTawi, a freshman from Warren Central High School, practiced vital CPR techniques on a medical dummy under the guidance of Professor Ken McKenney. As any healthcare professional knows, mastering CPR can mean the difference between life and death!
Students had a chance to unwind and embrace their inner child with a game of Operation while in the surgical technology lab. Who would have thought learning could be this much fun? It’s activities like these that ensure students remember the skills they’ve learned far into their careers.
The Future Healthcare Heroes Camp was much more than just a day of fun; it served as a platform for high school students to explore potential career pathways in healthcare. By engaging in a range of hands-on activities, every single student had the opportunity to enhance their understanding of healthcare professions and develop skills that will be indispensable in their future careers.
The enthusiasm and excitement for healthcare were palpable throughout the day. It’s encouraging to know that Kentucky’s future healthcare professionals are already taking significant steps toward building a fulfilling career.
