Governor Beshear Appoints WKU Alumnus to the Board of Regents
In a notable move, Governor Andy Beshear has appointed Western Kentucky University (WKU) alumnus and esteemed attorney, Derrick Helm, to the institution’s Board of Regents.
Following the expiry of Linda Ball’s term on the board, Helm was nominated by the Governor’s Postsecondary Education Nominating Committee to take her place. The WKU alumnus has been chosen to serve on the board until June 30, 2030.
Helm’s Connection to WKU
Helm, a dedicated WKU alumnus, graduated from the university in 2006. He later pursued law at the Salmon P. Chase College of Law in Highland Heights, Kentucky, completing his degree in 2009. He now runs his own litigation practice, Helm Shearer Wilson, based in Russell County.
Upon his appointment, Helm highlighted the impact of his education at WKU. He said, “The Hill has changed quite a bit since I made my daily walks to Cherry Hall, but the ‘Spirit’ of WKU has not changed. It is still a place of promise and achievement that I am very proud to be a small part of.”
A New Era for the Board of Regents?
Helm’s appointment sees him join Chair W. Currie Milliken and Vice-Chair Jan West as the three attorney regents of the board. With each bringing a unique perspective from their varied career paths, there are expectations of innovative approaches to the board’s work.
Helm, who humbly labels himself a ‘country lawyer’ from rural Kentucky, carries a wealth of experience in serving as counsel to several non-profit organizations and boards. His expertise in handling issues akin to those at WKU will prove invaluable, hence his enthusiasm towards his new role.

Reflecting on the issues he encountered as a student, Helm aims to leverage his collective professional and academic experiences to make optimal decisions for the university. With “no agenda” other than championing the best interests of the university and its student body, Helm is prepared to make a significant contribution to his alma mater.
The Board of Regents is set to have their annual retreat on August 8, followed by their next quarterly meeting on August 9. It is anticipated that the recent changes to the board, including Helm’s appointment, will usher in a new era of progressive leadership for the institution.
