Three Gatton Academy Students Presenting Groundbreaking Research at International Fair

In a phenomenal display of ingenuity, three students from the esteemed Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science are preparing to present their groundbreaking research at a globally renowned science competition. The talented individuals will fly to Los Angeles on May 11 to compete in the highly acclaimed Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.

Individual Contributions and Achievements

Nikhil Kumar, Zahra Chasmawala, and Asa Ashley are the prodigious students representing Gatton Academy in this international arena. With their extraordinary contributions to the world of science, they have stood out among their peers and have made a significant impact within the broader scientific community.

Nikhil Kumar: A Trailblazer in Satellite Modeling

Nikhil Kumar, a senior at Gatton Academy, claimed the Best of Fair title and the first place in the Physics and Astronomy category at the Louisville Regional Science and Engineering Fair. His praiseworthy research: “Optimized and Accurate Planetary and Interplanetary Satellite Modeling Via Utilization of Advanced Differential Equations,” explores pioneering methodologies for satellite preliminary testing with efficient algorithms.

Zahra Chasmawala: An Innovator in Neuron Energy Efficiency

Zahra Chasmawala, who also won the Best of Fair title and second place in the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics category, focused her research on neuron efficiency and potential healthcare applications. Her research “Modeling Neuron Energy Efficiency and Consumption Using Hodgkin-Huxley Equations with Analysis and Application,” delves deep into brain metabolism, focusing on the inefficiency between the overlaps of sodium and potassium ionic currents. Her research could potentially pave the way for breakthroughs in combating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Asa Ashley: An Environmental Pioneer in Green Energy

Asa Ashley, a junior at Gatton Academy, won Best in Fair as well as first place in the Energy: Sustainable Materials and Design category. His significant research, “Novel Synthesis of Maghemite Nanospheres on Nickel Foam as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Water Splitting,” sheds light on an environmentally friendly alternative to energy storage and conversion – hydrogen energy. In an innovative approach, Ashley overcame numerous challenges and discovered a less wasteful and more time-efficient process for energy synthesis.

High Hopes for International Fair

The three Gatton Academy students will present their individual research projects in the international competition taking place in Los Angeles on May 11. With phenomenal intellect and innovation, these students hope to share insights and gain invaluable feedback from leading scientists all over the globe.
