Free Local Testing Clinics Hosted For National HIV Testing Day

Bowling Green, KY is among numerous cities nationwide promoting public health on June 27th in observance to National HIV Testing Day. In association with this key event, Matthew 25 AIDS Services is offering free testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C at Walgreens located at 1145 U.S. 31 W Bypass from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Incentives to Encourage Public Participation

As part of the initiative, individuals receiving testing will obtain their results within 60 seconds. Furthermore, they will also receive a $15 Walmart gift card, as an encouragement for public participation. “The CDC recommends that people get tested at least once in their lifetime, so this is a great opportunity for the people. In addition to getting tested, they will also receive $15 gift cards,” stated River Carter, a prevention, and education specialist with Matthew 25.

“We really encourage people as knowledge is power and getting tested is really important to know your status and then to live your life in a safe way,” Mr. Carter added.

Breaking HIV-Related Stigma

National HIV Testing Day not only offers free testing but also helps fight the various misconceptions and stigma surrounding HIV. The event propagates the message that everyone should be tested at least once and that living with HIV is manageable, not a death sentence.

“A lot of people still believe that you can spread HIV through spit, through hugging, and sharing toilets, which is absolutely not the case,” Carter debunked. “That’s why we’re insistent about spreading the message into the community and speaking out about HIV. Whether someone tests positive or negative tomorrow, we have the resources to help people where they’re at.”

Multiple Avenues for Free Resources

For those unable to visit the Walgreens clinic, Matthew 25 continuously offers the same free resources at their own establishment at 811 Fairview Ave, Bowling Green KY. Additional testing sites celebrating National HIV Testing Day can also be found through visiting the GreaterThan.org website.
