Exciting One-Night Musical Event Celebrates 100 Years of Local Tragedy in Ramsey

Ramsey is buzzing with excitement as the Ramsey Theatre Company gears up to present a unique theatrical experience this Saturday at SkyPAC. The spotlight will shine on ‘Floyd Collins – The Musical’, a breathtaking production that not only tells the story of a local tragedy but also pays tribute to a moment in history that captivated audiences a century ago.

What’s it All About?

In 1925, Floyd Collins, a cave explorer, found himself trapped in Sand Cave while trying to turn it into a tourist attraction. Tragically, he was stuck underground for a grueling 14 days before succumbing to thirst, hunger, and hypothermia. This heartbreaking event didn’t just end in tragedy; it sparked one of the first media circuses in American history, drawing massive attention and public fascination. Weaving in this tale of misfortune, the musical dives into the social atmosphere of the time, exploring what was happening above ground during the infamous “Kentucky cave wars”.

An Evening to Remember

Don’t miss this *one-night-only* event, set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.. The show will showcase a talented cast led by Jesse McFarland in the role of Floyd. He is no stranger to the stage, having previously wowed audiences as The Beast in the Ramsey Theatre Company’s production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Joining him will be Noah Sowalskie, who is making his Ramsey Theatre debut as Homer Collins, and brings with him a rich background with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Belmont University. Rounding out the talented ensemble are Jonathan Vanderpool as Lee Collins, Ella Jones as Nellie Collins, and Elijah Milburn as Bee Doyle.

Musical Magic

The musical score is not just your average tune—think complex music that weaves together elements of bluegrass, jazz, and the classic sounds of musical theater. With Orchestra Kentucky providing instrumentation, you can expect an immersive soundscape that perfectly complements the show’s emotional journey. This orchestration is sure to elevate the show’s impact, making for a compelling evening of storytelling and artistry.

Director and Creative Team

The talented Alan White, a faculty member at WKU, will be at the helm as the director, with Julie Pride serving as the associate music director. And let’s not forget about the music direction by Grammy-award winning Dick Tunney. Also, keep an eye out for scenic designer Ashley Tingle, who will make her debut with Ramsey Theatre, bringing visual elements to life on stage.

Pre-Show Fun!

Why not come early and enjoy a pre-show experience? Attendees will be treated to an evening filled with guest speakers, refreshing cocktails, and a historical exhibit in the Goodwin Gallery. Among the guest speakers, Barclay Trimble and Chris Carmichael will delve into the historical background surrounding the events of Collins’ life and untimely death.

Post-Show Opportunities

But the fun doesn’t stop with the curtain call! After the show, there will be a meet and greet with the cast, providing fans a unique chance to connect with the performers. Additionally, author Roger Brucker, known for his work ‘Trapped! The Story of Floyd Collins’, will lead a discussion about the real-life events that inspired the musical.
