Children Shape Design of Bowling Green’s Downtown Park

Bowling Green’s Downtown Park Project Invites Children to Share Their Ideas

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The city of Bowling Green is excited to take a fresh approach in designing its new downtown park by involving elementary school students in the planning process. This initiative aims to tap into the creativity of young minds to come up with concept designs that could shape the future park.

Engaging the Next Generation

Jim Weinberg, the marketing director for the Riverfront Park Project, stated that there is something truly special about seeing how children perceive the world. “Seeing the creative work of these children, the way they see shapes and colors and all different activities, there is a certain sincerity and honesty about it,” Weinberg remarked. He believes that incorporating the children’s ideas can enrich the community’s vision for the park.

During a recent design session, children were encouraged to express their thoughts on what they would like to see in the park. One student shared a creative drawing of a parking lot, explaining, “Well, we’re going to need parking.” That thoughtful observation highlighted the importance of including practical elements in the design process.

Students Share Their Creativity

Students participating in the project expressed their excitement and enthusiasm. “I’ve always wanted to do this, so today is actually my lucky day,” said Aria, a student eager to contribute her ideas. This participation not only empowers the children but also gives them a sense of ownership in a project that will benefit their community for years to come.

The Vision for Riverfront Park

The Riverfront Park Project is set to take shape near the Historic College Street Pedestrian Bridge. The proposed features include an unloading station specifically for boats, areas for kayaking and tubing, and a new playground. The design aims to create a versatile space that can host a wide array of activities for both children and adults.

The total estimated cost for the park is $51 million. However, the city is optimistic about funding the project, having already secured substantial financial support through various grants.

Funding and Project Timeline

Brent Childers, the director of neighborhood and community services for Bowling Green, shared some exciting news regarding financing. “Just in federal grant funding, we’re over $4 million. The city has committed another $4.5 to $5 million, so we have funds moving forward.” Childers emphasized the city’s ongoing efforts to seek more grant money to support the project as it progresses through several phases.

The first phase of construction is slated to kick off in 2025, allowing ample opportunity for community participation and input. As this project unfolds, the city will continue to strive for more creative ways to involve the community and ensure the park serves the needs and wishes of its users.

This initiative not only reflects Bowling Green’s commitment to enhancing its community spaces but also showcases the value of incorporating diverse perspectives, especially those of its youngest residents, in shaping public spaces. The upcoming Riverfront Park is poised to become a vibrant gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
