Bowling Green is ready to take flight this Thanksgiving with an event that’s sure to ruffle some feathers! The city is hosting its first-ever Downtown Duck Drop on November 25, and it promises to be a quacking good time. Inspired by the classic turkey drop scene from the beloved TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati,” this event is drawing both chuckles and excitement from the community.
According to Grants Manager Nick Cook, who humorously referenced the iconic TV moment in a promotional video, the duck drop is more than just a fun event; it’s a way to raise funds for a good cause. The proceeds will benefit A Better BGKY nonprofit, specifically aiming to kick-start Duncan Hines Days 2025. This festival celebrates Bowling Green’s culinary heritage, and what better way to promote it than with a little whimsy?
“This initial public fundraiser was more (to) put a feeler out there, do something a little bit crazy and different, and see how the public reacts,” said Downtown Development Coordinator Telia Butler. And guess what? The community is loving it!
Here’s how it works: rubber ducks are available for purchase at just $5 each. Only 300 ducks are up for grabs, so if you want to join in on the fun, act fast! Each person can buy up to ten ducks, which will be dropped from a Bowling Green Public Works bucket truck at noon on the day of the event. The drop zone? The lively atmosphere of The Fringe food truck park!
As the ducks plunge into the air, they will land around a small target, and here’s where it gets exciting: the owner of the duck that lands nearest to the target will walk away with a $100 gift card to Houchens Food Group, along with a fabulous gift basket filled with goodies from local businesses. Butler mentioned that the winner does not need to be present to claim their prize, so anyone who has their duck in the running can relax and enjoy the festivities.
Planning to join the quacking fun? You can snag your ducks online through eventbrite.com, but remember, sales close at 10 a.m. on the day of the drop. Don’t miss out on your chance to participate in this light-hearted event that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Bowling Green.
But this isn’t just about the ducks! The city is genuinely excited to bring people together and encourage them to explore the downtown area. “The downtown businesses thought it was hilarious,” Butler said, adding that everyone is on board to promote local culture and boost foot traffic. This fun twist on fundraising has turned into a real community event where laughter and enjoyment soar.
With social media buzzing, Downtown BG is planning to broadcast the drop live, so even those who can’t make it can join in on the excitement from home. So mark your calendars and get ready for a comical yet meaningful addition to this year’s holiday celebrations.
As Bowling Green gears up for its inaugural Downtown Duck Drop, excitement fills the air. It’s more than just a quirky event; it’s a chance to come together, have fun, and support a great cause. So grab your ducks, bring your friends, and let’s make this a Thanksgiving to remember!
