Residents in Kentucky, particularly in Simpson County, are set to receive support with the approval of Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits. Following substantial flooding in February, eligible individuals and families in 14 counties can apply for essential assistance. The application process runs from March 5 to March 12, with options for both phone and in-person submissions. Additionally, hot meals can be purchased with SNAP benefits until March 27. The relief initiative aims to aid recovery efforts for those impacted by the flooding.

Disaster SNAP Benefits Approved for Flood-Affected Residents in Kentucky

Exciting news for residents of Kentucky, especially those in Simpson County! Following the historic flooding that devastated parts of the area back in February, Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits have been approved for eligible individuals and families affected in 14 counties. This relief initiative aims to help those whose lives have been turned upside down by the recent floods, mudslides, and landslides.

Counties Eligible for Assistance

If you’re living in or around any of these counties, you might be eligible for some much-needed support: Breathitt, Clay, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Simpson. So, if you have been impacted by the recent disasters in these areas, make sure to take advantage of this opportunity!

Application Process

Applications for D-SNAP benefits will be open from March 5 to March 12, with the exception of Sunday, March 9. You can either apply over the phone or in person, whichever is more convenient for you. The quickest way to get your application rolling is by calling the Department for Community-Based Services at 1-855-306-8959. Phone applications are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST. If you prefer to speak to someone face-to-face, walk-in applications can also be made at local DCBS offices during the same hours.

Replacement Benefits for Existing Snap Recipients

For residents already receiving SNAP benefits, here’s some good news: you can apply for replacements if you lost power or food due to the flooding and other household disasters. It’s a little bit of help that can make a big difference during tough times.

Purchase of Hot Meals Allowed

That’s right! If you’re a SNAP or D-SNAP recipient, you will be able to purchase hot, prepared foods at authorized retailers using your benefits until March 27. This is a fantastic initiative that allows families to grab a warm meal without stressing over the cooking.

Additional Assistance for Business Owners

But it doesn’t stop there! If you’re a resident or a business owner who has sustained losses, you can also apply for additional assistance online. Just head over to DisasterAssistance.gov or give them a call at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. These toll-free lines are operational from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time, seven days a week, ensuring that help is just a call away.

Support from Officials

Eric Friedlander, who is the secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, has emphasized how vital this federal emergency funding is for helping those impacted by the storm. This program aims to provide short-term food assistance to individuals and families living in areas federally declared as disaster zones, bringing a ray of hope to many struggling to get back on their feet.

A Pathway to Recovery

The D-SNAP program offers a much-needed safety net, making it easier for Kentuckians to focus on their recovery, instead of worrying about where their next meal will come from. If you’re in one of the affected areas, make sure you take a moment to reach out and see what benefits you can apply for. After all, it’s all about coming together and lifting each other up during tough times!
