Sponsor Our ArticlesBowling Green is celebrating Western Kentucky University sophomore Lilian Branch, who has been awarded her second Critical Language Scholarship. This achievement places her among only 500 recipients from over 5,000 applicants nationally. The scholarship allows her to study Chinese in Taiwan, continuing her exploration of critical language skills and fostering her research interests in biology. With aspirations to merge her language proficiency with scientific research, Lilian embodies the educational opportunities at WKU and inspires her community.
In a wave of excitement, Bowling Green is abuzz with the announcement of a remarkable achievement by one of its own, Western Kentucky University sophomore Lilian Branch. This talented student has been honored with her second Critical Language Scholarship, positioning her among an elite group of only 500 recipients selected from over 5,000 applicants across the nation. What an incredible accomplishment!
The Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS), managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is designed to immerse U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in summer language programs funded fully for their academic pursuits. The languages offered through this initiative are deemed critical for U.S. interests in areas such as national security, economic growth, and fostering global connections.
This upcoming scholarship will allow Lilian to travel to Taiwan to hone her skills in Chinese, marking her second consecutive year participating in this transformative program. A dedicated student pursuing majors in Biology and Chinese, she is also a proud member of WKU’s Chinese Flagship Program. Her ambition is clearly matched by her hard work and determination.
Lilian’s academic life isn’t only about classes; she’s diving deep into research at Dr. Joseph Marquardt’s lab. Here, she focuses on fascinating aspects of cellular shape regulation—research that holds the potential for breakthroughs in cancer prevention and treating fungal infections. This kind of innovative work is right in line with her goal of using her language skills for international collaboration in the scientific field.
After completing her Flagship Capstone Year, she has exciting plans to pursue a career in research that combines her scientific expertise with her passion for languages. She aims to tackle pressing global issues like antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases, making her a strong asset in the world of research and healthcare.
The Critical Language Scholarship recipients get to immerse themselves in a culture while participating in extensive language instruction over the span of eight to ten weeks. It’s a unique opportunity for young scholars to not only learn a language but also to live within the culture that speaks it. CLS programs cover a variety of languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and many more! There’s also a virtual option called CLS Spark, allowing students to begin their language journey online.
For those inspired by Lilian’s achievements, the Office of Scholar Development at WKU provides resources and guidance for students interested in applying for these scholarships. With email access at osd@wku.edu, support is just a message away. Becoming a part of these programs can elevate a student’s education and open doors to international experiences that can shape their future.
Lilian’s success not only reflects her hard work but shines a spotlight on the impressive educational opportunities available at WKU. With supportive parents like Gwen and Clint Branch cheering her on from Tennessee, it’s clear that community and family play an essential role in helping young students achieve their dreams.
As Lilian prepares for her next adventure in Taiwan, the entire Bowling Green community joins in celebrating her accomplishments and looks forward to seeing all the great things she will do in the future. Her journey is just beginning, and it’s sure to inspire many young students to follow their passions and seize opportunities that come their way.
