Bowling Green, KY – Community Mourns the Passing of Larry Caldwell Howlett
On August 31, 2024, the community of Bowling Green, Kentucky, lost a beloved figure with the passing of Larry Caldwell Howlett at his home. Larry, who was born on November 19, 1942, in Auburn, KY, made a significant impact throughout his life both professionally and personally. He was the son of William Caldwell and Nellie Rufine (McLellan) Howlett.
Early Life and Education
Growing up in Auburn, Larry attended local public schools for several years. Seeking a change, he transferred to Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee, where he completed his high school education. After high school, Larry initially enrolled at the University of Kentucky but later made the switch to Western Kentucky State College. He was proud to be part of the inaugural class of the college’s accounting program, graduating in 1964.
Career and Contributions
Following his graduation, Larry started working in his family’s leather tanning business but soon found himself drawn to accounting. He began a long and distinguished career with the IRS, specifically focusing on tax-exempt organizations. After dedicating thirty years to the IRS, he decided to retire and established Larry C. Howlett CPA, a firm that continued his passion for helping exempt organizations. His dedicated work with local and national groups solidified his reputation as a man dedicated to service.
A Life of Faith
Those who knew Larry often remarked on his deep love for the Lord, which was a central part of his life. Although he was not physically large, he was considered a giant in his faith. He extended a warm “Greetings” to every person he encountered, embodying kindness in all aspects of his life. Larry served in numerous churches throughout his life, taking on roles such as elder or deacon, teaching Sunday school, and volunteering in various ministries.
Family Life
Married to his wife, Edessa Howlett, for nearly 59 years, Larry raised two daughters, Tina and Laura. His family was not only important to him, but he was a proud Papa to five grandchildren and two great-grandsons. The love he showed for his family was evident and he will be deeply missed by them as well as countless friends.
Community Service and Legacy
In Larry’s honor, family and friends will gather for visitation on Friday, September 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, September 7, at 10:00 a.m. at Eastwood Baptist Church, where he was a member. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial in Auburn, KY. Larry wished for attendees to wear a T-shirt, button, or anything linking them to a ministry or not-for-profit organization he played a role in.
A Lasting Impact
In lieu of flowers, Larry requested that donations be made to organizations such as Hope House, HOTEL Inc., Curbside, and Hospice of Southern Kentucky. His life was a testament to generosity and community service, and his influence will be felt for years to come.
As the Bowling Green community remembers Larry Caldwell Howlett, those who were fortunate enough to know him reflect on the profound mark he left through his unwavering faith, kindness, and commitment to others.
