Bowling Green Community Leader Inspires Through Service

Bowling Green, Kentucky, has been significantly impacted by the dedication and service of _Johnalma Barnett_, a local native who has spent her life giving back to her community. With deep roots in the area, Barnett’s connection to her hometown is strong, shaped by her family history and the supportive people around her.

A Challenging Childhood, A Strong Community

Barnett’s story took a challenging turn when she lost her parents at the tender age of 10. Left to be raised by her aunt, she recalls the immense support from the community during a tough time. “_We had a village_,” Barnett shared, noting that both family and neighbors stepped in to ensure that she and her siblings were cared for. Growing up in Bowling Green’s West End, she often reminisces about memorable experiences, like when neighbors secretly planted a garden in her backyard, knowing her aunt wouldn’t approve. “_That’s how it was_ growing up, just being in the community because the community was such a big part of my life,” she said.

A Passion for People

Her upbringing inspired Barnett to develop a career rooted in helping others, particularly through customer service and retail. After more than thirty years at Western Kentucky University, where she worked in the post office and shipping, she retired. However, her passion for community service remains undiminished. “_I cared about the community and what was happening_,” Barnett expressed, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the needs of all residents in Bowling Green, not just a select few.

Advocacy for Economic Justice

Barnett became involved with various local programs and organizations, including the Poor People’s Campaign, which advocates for improved wages for low-wage workers. “_People shouldn’t have to work two or three jobs just to live_,” she explained. Barnett highlights the struggles faced by many in Bowling Green where earning just $12 an hour may force individuals to live with roommates, which she views as unacceptable.

Recognizing the Invisible

One of Barnett’s driving goals is to bring attention to “_the invisible people_” in the community, particularly those facing homelessness or other hardships. She emphasizes the significance of acknowledging their humanity, believing that a simple conversation can make a difference. “_There’s a story everywhere_,” Barnett said. Her approach is rooted in personal connection, calling individuals by name and engaging in dialogue.

Feeding the Community

Her commitment to service extends beyond advocacy work. Barnett leads a Feed America program at Lampkin Parks and organizes numerous food drives and school supply giveaways to support local families. Each year, she also plays a pivotal role in a Back to School Bash in collaboration with the police department, focusing on uniting the community and ensuring children have the supplies they need for school. “_It’s a big festival_. People come from all over, not just the West End,” she noted, outlining the event’s goal of supporting kids and reminding them that their community cares.

A Legacy of Love and Support

For Barnett, the act of giving back stems from her upbringing, where love and support were at the core of her development. She credits her aunt, her teachers, and the wider community for providing the foundation she needed to grow. “_I could have gone so many different ways in life, but I was blessed_,” Barnett reflected, reaffirming her belief in honoring the kindness she received by extending it to others. “_Somebody took the time to see something in me, so why can’t I take that same time to see something in you?_

Conclusion

Barnett’s life showcases the profound impact of community service and the power of kindness. Through her unwavering commitment to her community, she continues to create positive change, inspiring others to recognize their potential to make a difference, just as she has.
