Timeline: The In-depth Child Abuse Investigation at First Baptist Church Daycare

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The child abuse case at the First Baptist Church daycare in Bowling Green has had everyone talking for months. The case has been full of twists and turns and we’ve been there through it all, digging deep to shed light on what actually happened. Here’s a detailed timeline of the investigation.

Valentine’s Day Visit – February 14, 2024

The investigation began on Valentine’s day when the Kentucky Division of Regulated Childcare visited the First Baptist Church daycare. They had received an anonymous tip that a kid was slapped by a teacher.

State Clears Church – February 22, 2024

The church made a statement maintaining that no kid was slapped. However, video footage revealed that two employees were seen handling the kids inappropriately. These employees were immediately let go.

Parents Speak Out – February 23, 2024

18 parents, in response to the situation, expressed their disappointment and fear via a joint statement. They pointed out the daycare’s lack of communication and spoken out against the negligence.

A Pattern Detected – March 11, 2024

Records indicated that this wasn’t a one-off case. In January 2023, there was another incident involving a staff member who was seen on video being rough with a 23-month-old child. This employee was also later dismissed.

The Arrest – March 29, 2024

Maryana Shobe, one of the daycare’s employees, was arrested and charged with the alleged abuse of seven children. Video footage reportedly showed her carrying children in ways that put them at risk of injury.

Not Guilty Plea – May 9, 2024

An arraignment was held where Shobe pleaded not guilty to all 10 counts of child abuse.

Guilt Admission – August 14, 2024

In a phone call with the judge, Shobe reversed her plea and pleaded guilty. She was ordered to have an anger management assessment and banned from employment at any childcare facilities. Non-compliance could lead to jail time.

The director of the daycare during the time of the reported abuses was also fired.
