Bowling Green Prepares for Winter Weather Challenges

News Summary

As winter approaches, Bowling Green, Kentucky is proactively preparing for snowfall by ensuring roads remain safe and accessible. City officials have stocked up on over 2,000 tons of salt and conducted practice runs for snow removal operations. Residents are encouraged to assist by moving vehicles off the streets and staying informed about snow routes. A winter vehicle check-up and a winter safety kit are also recommended for optimal readiness. The combined efforts of the city and its residents aim to ensure a smooth winter season.

Bowling Green Gears Up for Winter Weather!

As the cold temperatures set in, Bowling Green, Kentucky is taking proactive steps to ensure that its roads remain safe and navigable this winter season. With the help of dedicated teams and strategic planning, the city is making sure it’s ready for whatever wintry weather may come its way.

Getting Prepared Early

Did you know that preparing for winter weather can start as early as summer? Andy Souza, the director of public works in the city, pointed out that this forward-thinking approach allows the city to secure essential resources like salt at a lower price. By stocking up on about 2,000 tons of salt, the city is doing its part to make sure they are well-equipped to handle any snow that may blanket the area.

Meteorologist Darius Mack recently dropped by to check out Bowling Green’s public works operations. It was a great opportunity to see how the city is preparing for the winter ahead. The preparation doesn’t stop with just salt; it involves a large number of people coordinated to make sure roads are cleared quickly.

Full Dress Rehearsal!

In October, the public works department held a full dress rehearsal to go through all their winter operations. This practice run is crucial for ensuring everything runs smoothly once the snow begins to fall. Last January, the city had quite the snow scare where they used around 500 tons of salt over just two days. With that in mind, planning ahead is even more important this year.

When the Snow Starts Falling

Bowling Green has made it clear: when at least two inches of snowfall are on the ground, or if heavy snow is forecasted, the plowing operations will kick into action. The city is neatly divided into ten snow removal zones to manage the clearing efficiently. This means that when snow applies the brakes to our daily commutes, you won’t be left waiting for help as city personnel will be ready to get to work!

How Residents Can Help

Winter Vehicle Ready Check

Now that winter is here, it’s wise for everyone to conduct a quick check on their vehicles. Keeping an eye on tire pressure and ensuring that the batteries are in good health is essential. Car batteries are especially susceptible to failing in colder temperatures, so be on the lookout for any signs of trouble!

Be Prepared with a Winter Safety Kit

Aside from checking your vehicle’s readiness, it’s a great idea to prepare a winter safety kit for added peace of mind while driving. A well-prepared kit should include tools for snow removal, jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit, blankets, phone chargers, snacks, and drinks.

This winter, let’s make Bowling Green a safe place to navigate! With the city and its residents working together, we can make sure the roads are kept clear and accessible when the snow starts to fall. Stay warm and drive safe out there!
