BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A promising new phase in the development of Riverfront Park is underway as the city of Bowling Green has secured a significant grant of $3.64 million from the National Park Service. This funding will help build a brand-new whitewater park on the Barren River, located near downtown. The announcement of this grant marks a key step in realizing the city’s vision for enhanced recreational opportunities along the riverfront.
Earlier this year, city officials expressed their intention to apply for the grant, aiming to enrich the Riverfront Park master plan with new amenities. A survey conducted among residents indicated that a whitewater sports facility ranked among the top five desired features for the park, highlighting community interest in this exciting addition.
The concept of creating a whitewater park in Bowling Green has been a topic of discussion for several years. Brent Childers, the director for neighborhood and community services, noted that about eight years ago, city staff began brainstorming ways to utilize the available property and existing walking trail. This initial idea sparked momentum towards transforming the vision of a full-fledged Riverfront Park into reality.
The proposed whitewater park will extend approximately 4,000 feet along the Barren River, stretching from the BGMU’s water treatment plant all the way to College Street. According to Childers, the park’s design will not only enhance recreational opportunities but also bolster river safety and accessibility. “The way this will be designed will allow the water to flow over and through, creating a safer access and a safer river,” he stated.
Currently, the existing dam poses a danger by acting like a “sieve,” potentially trapping items and even people that may enter the area. The new design aims to address this issue, creating calmer waters at the river’s edge. Childers explained, “It creates these pools in these areas,” making it safer for families and individuals who wish to enjoy the water without fully entering it.
The total investment for the whitewater park phase of the Riverfront Park master plan is estimated to be around $7.2 million. While the National Park Service’s grant covers half of this amount, the remaining funds will be sourced from the city of Bowling Green and the state.
Although the project is set to kick off, construction is projected to begin in the summer of 2025. Childers cautioned that the path to construction will take time. “We just got the word, so we gotta get all the grant stuff worked out for that, so we’re still probably a couple of years from construction for that,” he commented.

In summary, Bowling Green is taking an exciting leap with the introduction of the whitewater park, promising to bring new life and recreational activities to the Barren River, benefitting both residents and visitors for years to come.
