Bowling Green, Ky. celebrated yet another impressive victory as the Lady Purples took home their fourth consecutive District 14 Tournament title on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. The team achieved this feat with a 3-1 win against South Warren, impressively bouncing back after a rocky start. The final scores of the match were 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-10, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination at Warren Central High School.
As the match kicked off, it seemed like South Warren could give Bowling Green a run for their money. The Spartans began with a bang, jumping to a quick 8-3 lead and later maintaining their advantage to take the first set. Allie Chestnut’s stellar performance was a highlight, as she delivered several key kills to help South Warren clinch that opening set. The Bowling Green coach, Keith Carver, reflected on the shaky start, noting, “It was almost like we were playing with a football.” The nerves were palpable, especially considering South Warren had just secured a big win in the previous round.
However, it didn’t take long for Bowling Green to regroup. The second set saw the Lady Purples rally back with energy and precision. They executed a remarkable 9-3 run to seize a 17-11 lead, ultimately evenings the match as Kincheloe scored the final kill to secure the set for Bowling Green.
With the momentum on their side, Bowling Green stormed into the third set, establishing an early 19-12 lead. Yet, South Warren wasn’t about to back down easily. They mounted a comeback that tied the score at 21-21, but the Lady Purples stayed focused and scored three consecutive points to take the set, putting them ahead 2-1.
In the decisive fourth set, Bowling Green demonstrated their full potential, racing out to an 8-2 lead and maintaining control throughout to clinch the match. The audience could feel the excitement as the team reveled in their victory, and the energy in the gym was electric.
Lead by senior Addie Kincheloe, who was named to the all-tournament team, Bowling Green’s performance was nothing short of impressive. Kincheloe expressed her joy, stating, “It feels really good that we were able to keep up with last year, continue winning.” Amirra Bailey also had a standout game, racking up 25 kills to lead the team. Other notable contributions included Morgan Rockrohr with nine kills and Kincheloe herself adding six kills. Claire Lawless, who also received honors, was named the tournament MVP for her exceptional gameplay.
As both Bowling Green and South Warren advance to the region tournament scheduled next week, the anticipation builds for what lies ahead. Bowling Green is now set on chasing their third title in four years. Carver remains optimistic, sharing that the team is ready to tackle the added pressure saying, “Our goals are big. We want to go to George Rogers Clark.”
Meanwhile, South Warren has a lot to take away from this experience. Coach Erika Wenger praised her team for their effort, stating, “They definitely came out stronger in sets one and two.”
The girls have shown an incredible spirit throughout the season, especially navigating the challenges faced, including injuries and having to play on the road for the first month. Bailey noted, “We’ve all just uplifted each other throughout the process.” With the series of ups and downs, one thing is clear: both teams are well-prepared and eager for the challenges ahead.
