Sponsor Our ArticlesIn Bowling Green, a stolen vehicle incident at Kroger on Sunday led to the arrest of three local residents. The driver, Ajahona Belk, and her companions, Rue Chuol and Marcus Lawrence, found themselves in trouble after an attempted shopping trip for Thanksgiving. Security footage revealed suspicious behavior as they departed the store without groceries, and a search of their belongings uncovered stolen cheese and meat. The trio now faces multiple charges, highlighting the consequences of poor decisions during the holiday season.
Bowling Green was buzzing with excitement this past Sunday, but it wasn’t about football scores or holiday festivities. Instead, it became the backdrop for a drama that unfolded in the parking lot of Kroger, located at 350 U.S. 31-W Bypass. Law enforcement was alerted to a stolen vehicle parked at the grocery store, leading to a traffic stop that would result in the arrest of three local residents.
The action began at the intersection of State Street and East Riverview Street when the Bowling Green Police Department spotted the vehicle in question. What seemed like a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into something much more complicated. The driver, identified as Ajahona Belk, just 19 years old, claimed that she was unaware the vehicle was stolen, stating it belonged to a family member of her passengers. Her two companions, Rue Chuol (23) and Marcus Lawrence (21), were also from the Bowling Green area.
After some back-and-forth, Lawrence asserted that he had permission to borrow the vehicle from his sister. He backed that claim up by showing officers some messages that hinted he was planning to return the vehicle after running a few errands. Lawrence explained that he had even taken a detour all the way to Tennessee to visit a friend in the hospital before returning to Bowling Green.
But while the trio had originally embarked on a shopping trip for a “Friendsgiving” gathering, things took a turn. While inside the Kroger store, Belk and Chuol were captured on store surveillance footage pushing a cart filled with items. However, things got suspicious when they wandered into an area devoid of cameras. There, Chuol was seen with a black backpack, raising some eyebrows among the staff.
The duo was spotted exiting the store without any groceries in hand. Yet, a thorough investigation revealed that the backpack was hiding something far from innocent. In a surprising twist, investigators found cheese and meat inside the bag, and Chuol quickly admitted that the stolen goods were indeed his. It seemed that what was supposed to be a festive gathering may have turned into an opportunity for crime.
As the situation unfolded, charges were filed against the trio. Belk now faces serious allegations of theft by unlawful taking or disposition in the form of shoplifting, along with receiving stolen property valued between $1,000 and $10,000. On the other hand, Chuol is also facing similar shoplifting charges. Both Belk and Chuol were released after being processed. However, things took a darker turn for Lawrence, who remains in custody at the Warren County Regional Jail facing charges of receiving stolen property in the same value range as his companions.
This bizarre incident has raised eyebrows and drawn attention in Bowling Green. What began as a simple trip to shop for Thanksgiving festivities turned into an unfortunate series of events for these three young residents. As they navigate the consequences of their actions, it becomes a cautionary tale for others about the importance of making wise choices.
Local law enforcement continues to stress that they will not tolerate theft in any form. This is a reminder for all to be vigilant, especially during this holiday season, when temptation can creep in when least expected.
