Bowling Green, KY—On what was a beautiful fall evening, the Bowling Green boys’ soccer team put on a show at Greenwood High School, claiming the District 14 Tournament title with a resounding 3-0 victory over the South Warren Spartans on October 9, 2024. With a clear sky and temperatures hovering around a cool 47 degrees, fans were treated to an exciting game that showcased the talent and teamwork of the Purples.
From the get-go, Bowling Green made their intentions clear. Just six minutes into the game, Wasoo Shindano found the back of the net, giving the Purples a quick 1-0 lead. The momentum continued to build, and in the 19th minute, Hassan Bisengo deftly crossed the ball into the box which Chadrack Rumasha converted into the second goal of the match.
South Warren, who struggled to keep pace, had their best chance just before halftime with a shot that went high right in front of the goal. They were unable to convert, leaving the score at 2-0 as the teams headed for the break.
Bowling Green’s strength didn’t just come from their offensive efforts; their defense stepped up effectively as well. Henderson Wiggins, Bowling Green’s goalkeeper, made an impressive save early in the second half with a crucial header from South Warren. This kind of defensive performance has become a hallmark of the Purples, recording their third straight shutout and the 11th overall this season.
As the match wore on, the Purples sealed their victory late in the game. With only a few minutes left on the clock, Braden Widener, along with two of his teammates, turned a 3-on-1 situation against South Warren’s keeper into a textbook finish. Widener, who leads the team with 13 goals this season, mentioned feeling nervous but ultimately thrilled to have scored. “I didn’t know what to do, really,” he said. “But it ended perfect, so I will take it.”
Bowling Green’s coach, Craig Widener, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing that it was a good start for the postseason. “We had to work for it… but we are fortunate for the win and we get to keep practicing,” he said. He attributed the success of the team to the strong leadership of the seniors, stating, “It’s 11 kids that want to be here. They want to keep playing with each other, and they’ve done an excellent job getting us prepared.”
South Warren’s coach, Tom Alexander, acknowledged the strengths of Bowling Green but also pointed out areas where his team could improve. “They are a really good team and they are able to punish mistakes. We made two really silly mistakes, and they scored off both of them,” he noted. As both teams look forward to the next stage in the Region 4 Tournament, South Warren is eager to showcase better performances in the upcoming matches.
Both teams qualified for the Region 4 Tournament, which begins this Sunday at Warren East High School. Bowling Green stands as a strong favorite, but as Craig Widener remarked, “Any team on any night can beat anybody.” The games will be exciting, and the Purples will aim to take one game at a time as they build momentum for their title chase.
