The sinkhole’s history dates back to 2020 when it was first observed forming around an aging drainage system that has been in place since the early 1970s.

Background of the Sinkhole

According to geologist Nick Lawhon, engineers managed to complete some repairs in 2020, believing the issue was resolved at that time. However, homeowners in the area have recently noticed that the road has begun to sag, leading to renewed concerns. Lawhon explained the situation as follows: “It eventually got to the point where the homeowner at this location was noticing fallout around the edges of the concrete structure where, basically, as water is getting into the ground, it’s taking soil with it.” This erosion of soil creates voids beneath the surface, leading to further instability and potential hazards.

Initial Repairs and Prioritization

While some temporary repairs have been made to the drainage system in recent years, the sinkhole on Single Tree Way was not the top priority for permanent repairs due to the growing list of similar issues throughout the area. The local government maintains a contract with Scott & Ritter for addressing sinkholes. However, their first focus tends to be on those that pose immediate safety risks to the public.

Repair Process Explained

Lawhon elaborated on the typical process for fixing a sinkhole, stating that it is generally straightforward. “The intent is that we’ll dig down to the rock, remove all of the gravel and loose material that’s been put in over the years to stabilize the roadway and the structures, and remove any of the unstable saturated clay that gets down into the bottom of these things.” After clearing the area, the crew plans to build up layers of rock, starting from larger pieces and getting progressively smaller as they approach the surface.

New Complications Arise

While crews began their work on the sinkhole this week, they encountered unexpected complications. According to Lawhon, “Right now, we’ve got some utility complications.” This includes a sewer line located directly in the path of the repairs, necessitating discussions with BGMU to find a suitable stabilization method for the utility line. This unforeseen challenge is likely to extend the timeline for repairs.

Timeline for Repairs

Initially, Lawhon estimates that the repairs could take about a week and a half. However, he remains cautious about committing to any timeline, as sinkholes often present unpredictable challenges. “I have high hopes to be out of here earlier than that, but sinkholes will make a liar out of you every time. So, as soon as you start putting timelines on them they generally throw you another curve ball,” he remarked.

Current Road Closure

As crews work to address the sinkhole situation, that section of Single Tree Way is closed to traffic. Residents in the area are advised to take note of the ongoing repairs and remain cautious until a full resolution is achieved.
