Bowling Green, Ky. – A tragic incident that took place in July 2023 has left a local family searching for answers. The incident involved the death of Esteban Lowery after an officer-involved shooting on Russellville Road. Recent developments have confirmed that Lowery was the individual who lost his life that day, sparking an ongoing investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
On July 2023, Bowling Green Police Officer Matt Davis and a department-approved ride-along responded to a disturbance call at America’s Car-Mart. According to reports from the Kentucky State Police, Lowery allegedly pointed a gun at Officer Davis during this encounter. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in a shooting that left Lowery unresponsive at the scene.
While officers attempted to perform life-saving measures, specific details regarding the circumstances that led to Lowery becoming unresponsive have not been made public. Since the incident, members of the family and the community have been left with many unanswered questions.
The grief-stricken family is advocating for transparency and clarity surrounding Lowery’s death. Wayne Burton, Lowery’s first cousin, expressed the family’s desire for the truth. He stated, “It’s always three sides to a story; their story, our story, and the truth. All we’re looking for is the truth. What’s going on?”
Burton emphasized the need for information that would allow the family to begin the healing process. Despite numerous requests for updates from Kentucky State Police, the family has received only limited responses, leaving them feeling heartbroken and frustrated.
National civil rights activist John Barnett has stepped in to support Lowery’s family in their quest for answers. At a press conference, Barnett urged the community to remain calm but strategic in their efforts to seek justice. He insisted that they will not stop until they obtain the information they seek and stated, “These numbers are going to swell, and I got a creative way to get more people out here. I’m just getting started.”
Barnett indicated that he expects to receive a police report regarding Lowery’s death within three days. He warned that if that timeframe was not met, he would take direct action, potentially organizing marches to demand accountability.
Lowery’s mother, Lori Lowery, shared her heartache and frustration over the lack of information regarding her son’s death. She pointed out that while everyone has their problems, it’s important to recognize that Esteban was still a human being deserving of justice. “Yes, we all have issues, we all have mistakes. But still Esteban Lowery is and was a human being. Give us justice, please give this family justice,” she pleaded.
Lowery’s family disclosed that his death certificate indicated he died from strangulation; however, this information has not been confirmed by Kentucky State Police. The department provided a statement indicating that the timelines for investigations can vary, depending on the complexity of each case. The investigation into Lowery’s death has been submitted to the Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney, and further information cannot be disclosed as it may hinder the judicial process.
As the community continues to rally for answers, many hope that the investigation will bring clarity to the tragic events of that day, allowing healing to begin for Esteban Lowery’s family and friends.
