Bowling Green Welcomes New Satellite Library Branch

Bowling Green Welcomes New Satellite Library Branch

On October 3, 2024, the Warren County Public Library opened its newest satellite branch at the International Center of Kentucky, marking a significant step toward supporting the local international community and refugees. The branch aims to provide these groups with essential resources, including education, literacy, and language skills.

Hours of Operation

The new library branch operates from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. This schedule allows the community members ample time to visit during the week. The location provides access to a wide range of books and learning materials, along with essential services to help individuals improve their English language skills.

Support for The International Community

According to Brittany Blackerby, the satellite librarian, the library focuses on providing services tailored to Bowling Green’s diverse community, particularly aiding newcomers. “This allows us to offer library resources to a demographic that is often underserved – that’s new Americans,” Blackerby said.

The new branch is part of a partnership between the library and the International Center, situated at the Dr. Catherine Center for New Americans, to better integrate and support newcomers living in the area.

Educational Offerings and Resources

At the satellite branch, hundreds of books line the shelves, including bilingual materials aimed at children and adults. The collection mainly features juvenile-level books, perfect for those just beginning to learn English. Many of the available resources include picture dictionaries and DVDs, tailored for various language skills. Additionally, library cards will grant access to numerous online resources, including eBooks and audiobooks via platforms like hoopla and Libby.

Blackerby explained that the library acts as a resource hub where she can explain how the library works and assist visitors in signing up for library cards. This accessibility is especially important since many mothers with young children struggle to attend traditional English classes. The story times she hosts provide these moms with essential English instruction in a relaxed, informal setting.

Community Engagement Initiatives

With about 15 to 20 people visiting the library each week within the first two and a half weeks, the response has been positive. Many patrons are particularly drawn to materials that assist them in their English learning journey. Blackerby plans to implement additional programs in the future, including story times focused on languages like Swahili and Spanish.

Albert Mbanfu, the Executive Director of the International Center of Kentucky, emphasized the necessity of providing comprehensive support to refugees who need to learn English for integration. “In order for them to do that, they will need to have the resources necessary,” Mbanfu stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the library and the center.

Looking Ahead

As the library branch continues to grow and adapt to the needs of the community, both Blackerby and Mbanfu are optimistic about the future. They aim to foster an atmosphere where new skills can be acquired, cultural integration can happen, and community engagement can flourish.

For those interested in volunteering or getting involved, additional information is available by contacting the library at 270-781-8336.

The new satellite branch represents a beacon of opportunity for many in Bowling Green, enhancing access to literacy and fostering a more inclusive community.
