Bowling Green Gears Up for Major Road Repairs and Humane Society Expansion

Exciting changes are rolling into Bowling Green! The city recently made a big decision that will significantly improve the roads you drive on every day. City commissioners have voted unanimously to approve a project worth $2 million aimed at enhancing the city’s streets. This means that in the near future, residents will see repaving done on many sections throughout the city in fiscal year 2025.

What’s in Store for Our Streets?

City Manager Jeff Meisel excitedly shared that this project will cover roughly 11 miles of overlay paving. Just imagine a smoother ride! It’s expected that most of this work will kick off in the spring once the asphalt plants wake up from their winter slumber.

According to city plans, more than 140 sections of roadway are set to receive attention. The list includes residential favorites like Mooreland Drive and Canterbury Way but also features major routes like Dishman Lane and Westen Street, the latter of which conveniently connects Campbell Lane with Scottsville Road. The busiest area for repaving will be the Traditions Boulevard stretch off Lovers Lane, where nine overlays are planned.

In addition to paving, the city has also recognized the need for further enhancements. The project includes repairs to asphalt and the much-needed replacement of 56 handicap ramps across Bowling Green, ensuring accessibility for all residents.

Meisel also cautioned that, as with most public works projects, things could change along the way. “This is always a little bit subject to change,” he said, noting that they might initially hold off on some projects due to likely street cuts but would plan to address them later.

A New Chapter for Animals in Bowling Green

Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society. The approval of a quitclaim deed for 3.42 acres at 1925 River Street will facilitate the expansion of spay and neuter services. “We have seen an extreme increase” in activity, shared Lorri Hare, the head of the Humane Society, pointing out that the organization now averages around 11,000 intakes a year. That’s a significant increase from the 2,800 intakes reported 25 years ago when Hare first joined.

According to City Attorney Hillary Hightower, the land and the current facilities were co-owned by the city and the county, making this move a collaborative effort to better serve the community. Hare expressed her commitment to seeing this expansion through, stating, “There’s no doubt in my mind that what we do will be state-of-the-art.” It’s a personal mission for her, as she hopes to see this project completed before her retirement.
