Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Bowling Green Parks and Recreation department has launched a comprehensive 10-year master plan to improve local parks with community input. The initiative aims for inclusivity and year-round aquatic facilities, addressing residents’ requests for an indoor swimming pool and other amenities. Following an initial community meeting, further engagement will continue through surveys and additional meetings, ensuring that all voices are heard as the city prepares its parks for future growth.
Hey there, Bowling Green! Exciting things are happening in town as the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation (BGPR) department kicks off a brand new initiative to make our beloved parks even better. They’re rolling out a comprehensive 10-year master plan aimed at enhancing our community’s green spaces and they want YOUR input to make it happen!
This isn’t just any plan; it’s a chance for the community to voice what kinds of improvements folks would like to see in their parks for years to come. BGPR is teaming up with the consulting experts at MKSK to craft this master plan, ensuring that every voice is heard. The very first of three community engagement meetings was held on March 17, 2025, and demonstrated just how much residents care about their parks.
With the intention to create parks that welcome everyone, the master plan isn’t just checking boxes; it’s designed for inclusivity and diversity in park usage. Community feedback is flowing in, and one clear theme has emerged—the desire for an indoor swimming pool. Many residents have pointed out that current aquatic facilities will barely suffice, especially during the colder months. Addressing these concerns is a top priority and will highly influence park improvements moving forward.
It’s no surprise that swimming is a popular activity, especially in the summer. Bowling Green has faced challenges with year-round swimming options for laps, and this has drawn attention from many corners of the community. Leaders are recognizing the urgent need for these facilities and are eager to see improvements that will cater to both family recreational swimming and serious lap swimmers alike.
The project is already in its first phase—an extensive data inventory and needs assessment that will continue until April 2025. BGPR is leaving no stone unturned! They’re taking what they learn here to map out the future of our parks. And don’t worry if you missed the meeting; an online survey will be available soon for even more input from residents.
As Bowling Green anticipates population growth in the coming years, the master plan aims to align improvements with this expected influx. The goal is to prepare parks that not only serve today’s residents but also welcome future generations to enjoy the beauty of parks.
What’s next? After the planning and data analysis phase wraps up, the second phase will kick off, which focuses on visioning, strategy, and development. A second community meeting is on the horizon, scheduled for June, and residents are encouraged to take part in this continuing conversation about local parks.
BGPR isn’t new to gathering community input. They previously worked on projects like Riverfront Park and whitewater rafting facilities that are the result of listening to community suggestions. And this time around, they’re also making sure to reach out to the younger crowd. Initiatives at local schools and youth sports events are in place to find out what kids and teens want, including more turf fields for activities like soccer, which would be fantastic for our active youth.
City leaders stress how vital parks are for health, wellness, and community building. This became even clearer during the COVID-19 pandemic when many found comfort in the outdoors. The parks play a significant role in providing safe, open spaces for people to gather, exercise, and simply enjoy the fresh air.
Funding for the exciting new initiatives will be pursued after the plan is finalized, with careful attention to both execution and maintenance costs. With everyone’s collaboration and input, Bowling Green is set to transform its parks into vibrant spaces that meet the needs and wishes of its residents. So stay tuned, get involved, and let’s make our parks the best they can be!
