Bowling Green Gears Up for Leadership Discussion as Nursing Programs Shine Bright

Exciting times are ahead for Southcentral Kentucky as Southcentral Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) gears up for a pivotal open forum dedicated to its next president. The engaging event is scheduled for March 4 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the main campus in Bowling Green. This is a fantastic opportunity for community members, students, and stakeholders to weigh in on the essential leadership qualities they envision for the new president. The college also boasts a campus in Glasgow, conveniently located off Trojan Trail.

The process for finding the college’s next leader will be facilitated by Ryan Quarles of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, alongside the experts from Myers McRae Executive Search and Consulting. As the college embarks on this search, it’s clear that input from the community is vital in shaping the future of SKYCTC.

Transitioning Leadership

Since August 2024, Brooke Justice has taken on the role of interim president, stepping in to succeed Phil Neal, who has transitioned to become the acting executive vice president and provost for the college system. This leadership shift signifies not only a new chapter for SKYCTC but also an opportunity for fresh ideas and direction.

Making Waves in Nursing

RegisteredNursing.org. The Glasgow campus proudly holds the title of the best nursing program, while the Bowling Green campus secures a close second. Such achievements reflect the college’s dedication to healthcare education and the exceptional training provided to students.

Recently, the college celebrated the success of 36 Practical Nursing students during an inspiring nursing pinning ceremony held at the Cave City Convention Center. This ceremony is more than just a formality; it marks the significant milestone of these students completing their Practical Nursing Diploma, demonstrating their hard work and commitment to a career in nursing. Dr. Angie Harlan, Dean of Allied Health and Nursing, commended the students for their perseverance and determination amidst challenging circumstances.

Scholarships Shine Bright

Moreover, two standout students have gained state-wide recognition and were honored with prestigious scholarships—the Kim Nealis Williams Scholarship and the Rebecca Forest Scholarship. Both awards require recipients to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, showcasing the academic excellence cultivated at SKYCTC.

Economic Growth in Glasgow

Nemak USA Inc. is set to make waves in Glasgow with the announcement of a substantial 170 job creation initiative due to a remarkable $27 million expansion of its operations. This exciting growth is designed to support future electric vehicle-related business, featuring essential upgrades to the building and the introduction of new equipment. This expansion promises to enhance the college’s training efforts in collaboration with SKYCTC and Western Kentucky University.

Production of new parts at Nemak’s facility is anticipated to begin early next year, with full-scale production projected for Q3 2022. Having been an integral part of Barren County’s economy since 2012, Nemak also operates another facility on American Avenue in Glasgow. Significantly, the company directs a notable 20% of its 2020 spending toward suppliers in Kentucky, highlighting its commitment to the local economy.

In what’s sure to bolster Nemak’s growth trajectory, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has provisionally approved a generous 10-year incentive agreement under the Kentucky Business Investment program, potentially offering up to $2.5 million in tax incentives. This decision reflects the state’s dedication to fostering economic development within the region.

Brighter Futures Ahead

As the community in Bowling Green and Glasgow anticipates both the open forum for the presidential search and the continued success within the nursing programs, it’s evident that SKYCTC plays a vital role in shaping brighter futures. With opportunities for education and growth blossoming, residents can look forward to the promising developments that lie ahead.
