Bowling Green Honors New Citizens at Annual Reception

On the evening of September 10, 2024, the City of Bowling Green hosted its 8th annual Reception for New Americans at the Sloan Convention Center. This significant event celebrated the achievements of over 140 individuals who recently became naturalized citizens of the United States between September 2023 and September 2024.

A Ceremony of Achievement

The reception gathered a diverse group of new citizens, their families, and community leaders, all coming together to recognize an important milestone in the lives of these individuals. The atmosphere was filled with joy and pride as each new citizen received their certificate, a symbol of their hard work and determination.

Mayor Todd Alcott, alongside City Commissioners Carlos Bailey, Sue Parrigin, Melinda Hill, and Dana Beasley Brown, was present to honor the new Americans. The event was marked by handshakes and smiles as each recipient lined up to receive their hard-earned document.

Warm Welcomes

Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed mingling with each other and city leaders. The moment when new citizens were presented their certificates was particularly memorable. Cleopatra Ornella Ngandu Ngalula was among those honored. She warmly chatted with Mayor Alcott while lining up for her photo. Such exchanges added a personal touch to the evening’s formalities.

City Commissioner Dana Beasley Brown greeted several attendees, making sure they felt welcomed and appreciated. The reception served not just as a ceremony, but as a heartfelt gathering representing the community’s commitment to inclusivity.

Recognizing Contributions

Retired City Manager Kevin DeFebbo was recognized with the Naturalization Champion Award during the event for his notable efforts in promoting naturalization within the city. This acknowledgment highlighted the continued support from local leaders in making the process of becoming a U.S. citizen accessible and encouraging.

Bowling Green City Manager Jeff Meisel and International Communities Liaison Leyda Becker presented this prestigious award, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and the contributions of new citizens to the fabric of Bowling Green.

A Look Ahead

As the evening progressed, attendees exchanged stories, shared their experiences, and expressed excitement for their journeys ahead as U.S. citizens. The sense of community and support was palpable, showcasing the city’s commitment to embracing individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The rain showers forecasted for the afternoon did little to dampen the spirits of those gathered, as the celebratory mood filled the indoor venue. With a chance of rain at 50% and temperatures reaching a high of 84°F, the city’s residents showed resilience, reflecting the strength and determination of the new Americans being honored.

In Conclusion

Bowling Green continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where new citizens can feel at home. As over 140 individuals officially joined the ranks of U.S. citizens, the community came together to celebrate this shared moment of joy and pride. With continued efforts from local officials and community members alike, Bowling Green stands as a shining example of what it means to welcome newcomers with open arms.
