Bowling Green, KY – What a night it was for the Hilltoppers! In an electrifying match against the Toledo Rockets, the WKU football team turned a shaky start into a stunning comeback, thanks in part to their very own native son, Caden Veltkamp. As he donned the quarterback’s jersey for his first start, he certainly made it a memorable one.
Both teams faced a tough start with neither able to put points on the board in the first quarter. The Hilltoppers received the opening kickoff and were making strides down the field when Veltkamp made an ambitious throw that ended in double coverage—his first interception of the game. Meanwhile, Toledo’s first drive ended in a turnover on downs, leaving both teams in a stalemate.
As the second quarter rolled around, things began to heat up. Toledo managed to score first after a 10-play drive that concluded with their quarterback, Tucker Gleason, sneaking it in from the one-yard line. This really set the tone as the Rockets followed with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Torres, putting the score at 14-0 and giving the fans plenty of reasons to cheer.
The Hilltoppers, however, were not about to be left out of the action. With less than two minutes left in the half, Veltkamp found his rhythm and connected with Kisean Johnson for a dazzling 44-yard touchdown that sparked life into WKU’s hopes. Heading into halftime, the score stood at a manageable 14-7 in favor of Toledo.
As the third quarter kicked off, the Hilltoppers made a bold move when they recovered a fumble and set themselves up for a field goal by Lucas Carneiro. Their persistence paid off as they closed the gap to just four points. Toledo responded effectively, with Gleason tossing another touchdown pass to Torres, extending their lead to 21-10. Little did they know, that would be their last score of the night.
The second half saw a remarkable defensive display from the Hilltoppers, who forced not one, but four turnovers. Devonte Matthews emerged as a star with two interceptions, including one captured with only 13 seconds left in the game. Talk about clutch!
With the scoreline still favoring the Rockets, Veltkamp showed his capabilities, rushing in for two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, the second coming with just over five minutes remaining. Suddenly, the Hilltoppers found themselves in the lead for the first time in the game, with a final score of 26-21.
Veltkamp’s final stats showcased a well-rounded performance: he completed 20 out of 30 passes, with 242 yards, a passing touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns. He also had two interceptions, but his ability to bounce back was on display for all to see.
With this victory under their belts, the Hilltoppers will now set their sights on a challenging matchup against Boston College, scheduled for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff. It’s safe to say that if they can keep this momentum going, they might just surprise a few more teams this season!
This win serves not only as a testament to the talent on the WKU roster but also as an wonderful comeback story for the homegrown quarterback, reminding everyone that a little determination and teamwork can go a long way.
