Bowling Green Gets Ready for School with Luau and STEAM Night

Bowling Green, Kentucky – Kids and families in Bowling Green will be treated to a fun and educational event this July to celebrate the end of summer and gear up for school. Bowling Green Parks and Recreation (BGPR) is joining hands with Warren County Public Library (WCPL) to kick off its Back to School Luau and STEAM Night at the Russell Sims Aquatics Center.

Cameron Levis, Recreation Division Manager of BGPR, gave us the scoop. “So basically it’s an end-of-summer celebration trying to get kids and their families’ minds back right for school by just having some fun activities on the pool deck that are focused on STEAM-related things,” he explained.

What’s STEAM, you ask? It’s short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, and the event is all about getting kids ready for going back to school with several entertaining activities that are focused on these areas of knowledge.

“We might have like a tie-dye activity over on the pool deck. The library is going to bring their Dino bones for kids to play with and build and discover and find,” Levis gave us a tease into what’s in store for the kids. “We like to do some fun things with the features in the zero-depth here, so the buckets that dump, we like to do a little relay with that. We might [also] have some rubber ducks and race them down the slides just to see how fast they go”.

One of the best parts? The event is free to the public. But if folks are feeling generous and want to contribute, a donation of school supplies is encouraged. “We want to make this an opportunity for us to give back to our community as well. So we encourage them to bring all, all sorts of school supplies that kids may need here in our community but may need help acquiring,” Levis explained.

But what happens to the school supplies they collect? They don’t just sit in a storeroom! Levis assures us that any supplies they get will then be distributed to local schools or organizations they partner with. “We’ll kind of disperse those after the event and make sure they get to the right people and the kids that need the most,” he added.

The event will take place on July 29th, and will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s a perfect way to bid farewell to summer and welcome the new school year. With the fun activities in store and the opportunity to contribute to the local community, it’s surely an event no one in Bowling Green should miss!
