Bowling Green Lady Marks Her 101st Birthday with Lively Celebration

Bowling Green, – On July 9th, a cherished resident of the Bowling Green region, Mabel Kirk, celebrated her fantastic 101st Birthday. Mabel pronounces her secret to her long-life journey to be ‘clean living.’

Mabel, a sweet soul original from Owensboro, takes pleasure in recalling her early days. She reminisces about her education journey that started in a single-room schoolhouse. She nostalgically mentioned, “One grade would go up to the teacher’s desk and have that class,” she said. “Then another room would go. So we got all eight grades in every day.” This educational journey passed, leading her to graduate high school for her adulthood.

Once Mabel stepped into adulthood, she didn’t sit idle. During World War II, Mabel started working at General Electric. She took part in assembling vacuum tubes required for radio transmitters. Mabel looked back at that time, saying, “A lot of things were rationed,” she said. “I don’t think there was anything we really had to give up. We tried to do our best for the war effort.” As an incredible gesture for the war effort, Mabel steered through the war and then stepped into marital life.

In 1946, Mabel married an auto mechanic, and this couple lived through 71 years of marriage. “He was one of the best,” Mabel said. “We lived in Bowling Green. We had a happy time, with two children.” With a happy family, Mabel continued her journey to her marked 101st Birthday.

Even at 101, her advice for living a long life is straightforward. “Try to have a clean living and be friendly and help others,” she said. Simple advice from a simple woman who’s witnessed a century of history!
