Bowling Green Junior High Celebrates Black History Month with WKU Fraternities and Sororities
An Event in Celebration of Black History Month
Bowling Green, Ky. – Numerous historically African American fraternities and sororities from Western Kentucky University (WKU) were welcomed at Bowling Green Junior High as part of the Black History Month celebration. This year, the spotlight was on the arts, with each group making their time on stage truly memorable.
They captivated the students with speeches, performed traditional fraternity and sorority chants, fascinated them with riveting dance routines, recited powerful poetry, and adorned the event with their unique and vibrant artwork. As Dr. Martha Sales, the WKU Dean of Students, described it, the event was about celebrating not just black history, but also the fruition of excellence among their college students.
The Importance of Post-Secondary Education
Dr. Sales emphasized the significance of post-secondary education, stating, “Today was a celebration where we brought WKU to Bowling Green Junior High in celebration of Black History Month. Not only do we want to celebrate black history, but we also want to display some of our greatness from the hill without college students to let our junior high students know how important post-secondary education is.”
Presentation of the Divine Nine
Adding to this enriching cultural exchange, the students were also privy to a special video that outlined the historical journey of the African American fraternities and sororities, collectively referred to as “The Divine Nine.” The video aimed at broadening their understanding of college life and the opportunities it provides.
Dr. Sales further stated, “Now often times students are deterred from going or thinking about college. Now they can see that students still have a life outside of academics, especially our students of color.”
The Impact of the Event
The goal of this event was not just to commemorate Black History Month but also to inspire the students at Bowling Green Junior High by fostering a collegiate culture and exposing them to the possibilities that lie in the pursuit of higher education. Through the experience and stories shared by the members of the Divine Nine, the students became more aware of their ability to achieve and excel academically while enjoying a full college life.
Based on the feedback from the event, it’s safe to say that these young minds left excited and inspired by the prospects the future holds and the rich history they carry forward.
