Bowling Green Celebrates 60 Years of Insurance Excellence

In a delightful celebration, McCay & Associates Insurance recently marked its 60th anniversary with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony, bringing local community members together on March 21, 2025. This joyous event was in partnership with the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, highlighting the long-standing commitment of McCay & Associates to the community it serves.

A Legacy of Service

The story of McCay & Associates Insurance began in 1965 when founder Auston McCay ventured into the world of insurance by selling life and health policies to his fellow students at Western Kentucky University (WKU). Fast forward six decades, and the agency has become a cornerstone of the Bowling Green area, celebrating not just its long-standing history but also its commitment to quality service and community engagement.

The journey hasn’t always been simple. For more than 50 years, McCay & Associates traded in the iconic Milliken Building in downtown Bowling Green, a location that saw countless interactions between agents and clients. In 2017, McCay & Associates took a leap of faith, relocating to the former Sue’s Dairy Dip building located on 31-W Bypass. However, last year, they found a new home in the former Service One Credit Union building, marking a significant milestone for the agency as it enters a more permanent phase of its journey.

Founder’s Journey and Impact

Auston McCay’s journey is truly inspiring. After graduating from Graham High School in Muhlenberg County, he obtained a business degree from WKU, specializing in sales, marketing, and insurance. As if that wasn’t enough, Auston continued to expand his expertise, earning advanced insurance designations such as Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). His impressive background isn’t just rooted in personal achievement; it’s also marked by dedication to the community through education. Auston even taught a business class at WKU, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of business leaders.

Beyond his personal accomplishments, McCay has made significant contributions to the insurance industry as a whole. Over the years, he engaged in various roles within the local, state, and national Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. His involvement in shaping state and federal insurance regulations speaks volumes about his commitment to his profession.

Auston’s influence extended to federal health care policy in the early 90s, particularly as he was selected to align Medicare supplement plans following federal standardization. His leadership was further demonstrated when he served as president of the Kentucky National Association of Life Underwriters (now known as the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors) in 1999. During his term, he taught lawmakers the intricacies of insurance, helping to pass an impressive ten pieces of legislation in one session.

Auston’s collaboration with high-profile figures, including Kentucky Insurance Commissioner George Nichols III, also led to important measures, such as mandating insurance companies to check Social Security records for unclaimed life insurance benefits.

Today and Tomorrow

Today, McCay & Associates remains an influential figure in Bowling Green’s insurance landscape. The agency continues to operate with the same spirit of service instilled by its founder, with Auston actively working alongside his children—broadening their family legacy in the insurance field. His son, David McCay, and daughter, Janet Martin, are also pivotal team members, ensuring the tradition of excellent service carries on.

The agency has maintained a skilled team, including longtime agents Jessica Johnson and Nancy Brown, among other dedicated staff members, solidifying its reputation as a professional and friendly environment where community members can seek wise advice regarding life and health insurance.

As McCay & Associates Insurance looks forward to the future, it remains committed to providing the highest level of service to the people of Bowling Green. Celebrating 60 years is no small feat, and it’s clear they are just getting started! Here’s to many more years of excellence in service and community engagement!
