In Memory of a Beloved Academic Figure

In the heart of Bowling Green today, a poignant silence fills the halls of the Mahurin Honors College as the community mourns the loss of Dr. Craig Cobane, its executive director. Cobane, a charismatic and devoted academic leader, passed away on May 25th after a resilient battle with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Earlier this year, Cobane had publicly announced his move into hospice care when all treatment options had been exhausted. Despite enduring surgeries and chemotherapy, his commitment to his role at the honors college never wavered. A picture of resilience and tenacity, Cobane set an inspiring example for students and faculty alike.

Commitment and Passion in Academia

His tenure as executive director was marked by fervor and dedication. Cobane was instrumental in shaping Kentucky’s first true honors college, making a significant contribution to the reputation and standing of WKU.

Former president of WKU, Dr. Gary Ransdell, spoke about Cobane’s legacy: “He was relentless in recruiting not only Kentucky’s brightest students but also those far beyond our borders. And it wasn’t about simply getting them enrolled but helping them realize their dreams that Craig was truly passionate about.”

Irreplaceable Loss

The absence of Cobane’s impactful presence is deeply felt by the campus community. He is remembered not only as a distinguished academic leader but also as an inspiring mentor to students. “It is a huge void that will be a challenge to fill,” Ransdell noted, sharing his grief over the loss of his esteemed colleague.

A Community in Mourning

The university community, friends, and family alike are dealing with the sobering news of Cobane’s passing. Provost Bud Fischer, expressing his condolences, said, “For the thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents that knew and loved Craig, we send our deepest sympathies and our heartfelt condolences.” The news has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes expressing respect for Cobane’s work and his indomitable spirit.

A Dedication to His Memory

In honor of Dr. Craig Cobane’s immense contributions to the Mahurin Honors College and his incredible spirit, the community plans to organize a memorial in the coming weeks. Cobane’s life was one of purpose and commitment, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those he came in contact with throughout his journey in academia. His legacy of inspiring students to envision and pursue their biggest dreams will undoubtedly continue to influence generations to come.
