Bowling Green Community Rallies for Local Kids with Holiday Toy Drive
Bowling Green, KY – As the holiday season approaches, the WKU Student Government Association (SGA) is taking action to spread some joy among local children by organizing a heartwarming toy drive benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green. Mark your calendars! This initiative kicks off on November 20 and runs through December 3, allowing students and community members ample time to contribute.
How You Can Help
As a bonus, volunteers will earn one service hour for every toy donated, up to a maximum of five hours. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to rack up some community service while spreading holiday cheer!
Behind the Initiative
Leading the charge is Savanna Kurtz, a bright sophomore majoring in communication disorders and an active SGA senator. She played a key role in creating the legislation for the toy drive. In her previous experience with the toy drive last year, Kurtz was inspired by the joy on staff members’ faces as they watched the collection grow. “It was truly amazing getting to see the staff’s smiles as we brought in all of the toys last year,” she shared with enthusiasm.
With a budget of $200 allocated for purchasing additional toys, Kurtz aims to ensure a balanced distribution of gifts across various age groups. “This money is helpful to even out the number of toys we have for certain age groups,” she explained, noting that different demographics often see uneven contributions. “This allows us to bridge the number gap and ensure that every child is accounted for.”
A Bond with the Community
Donating to the toy drive isn’t just about giving; it also fosters a warm connection between WKU students and the Bowling Green community. “The bond WKU has with the community is something that makes Bowling Green so beautiful,” Kurtz continued. By participating in this initiative, students can enhance their sense of compassion and empathy, crucial values as the community comes together during the season of giving.
Looking ahead, Kurtz expresses her hope that SGA will continue this heartwarming tradition in the future. “The local Bowling Green children are so deserving and appreciative of the gifts that come directly from the WKU community,” she adds with a hopeful smile. “It would be incredible if this toy drive could be continued in years to come.”
