Bowling Green Welcomes New Gateway Sign on I-165
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A welcoming gesture is taking shape along I-165 as a new sign project is set to enhance visitor experience in Warren County. Currently, the site may appear to be just a pile of dirt, but plans are in motion to develop a significant gateway to the city of Bowling Green.
Details of the Project
According to Johnny Webb, the chairman of Operation PRIDE, the sign will feature two stone walls topped with large, red letters spelling out “Bowling Green.” Below this, the sign will also prominently display “Warren County” and “Home of Western Kentucky University.” In addition, visitors will see flagpoles that will showcase the American flag as well as flags from all branches of the military.
Land Donation from Local Resident
The designated land for the sign has been generously donated by its owner, Malcolm Cherry. Cherry shared how the idea for the sign came about during a flag-raising ceremony at the Corvette Museum. He recalled a conversation with Johnny Webb that sparked the opportunity for the donation. “Johnny approached me and said, ‘You don’t know who owns that piece of property on the corner there, do you?’” Cherry recalled. When he learned it was his property that was under discussion, he quickly offered to donate it for the sign project. “I will gladly donate it to this project,” he stated.
A Welcoming Gateway
Webb emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it will serve as a gateway for visitors arriving from various regions, including those coming from western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana. He pointed out that until now, the area lacked a proper welcome sign for travelers entering Bowling Green. “This is how they would come in to Bowling Green… so we’ve been missing… a gateway, if you will, for those folks,” Webb said.
Timeline for Completion
Those involved in the project estimate that it will be completed in approximately six weeks. Once finished, the new sign will mirror the welcoming structures seen on I-65 at exits 20, 26, and 30, and will serve as a prominent feature for anyone driving through the area.
