Traffic Alerts and Flooding Warnings in Bowling Green, KY

Bowling Green, KY, is currently facing a series of challenges following a series of storms that rocked the region over the weekend. As residents assess the aftermath of heavy rains and flooding, the city has also announced important updates regarding road closures and ongoing repairs. If you’re planning on heading out soon, you might want to pay attention to these developments!

Double Springs Road Closure

First up on our list, Double Springs Road is set for a closure that all drivers should be aware of. The road will be closed in both directions between Coombs Drive and Grissom Court on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Electric crews from Bowling Green Municipal Utilities are gearing up to replace a damaged pole, which is the main reason for this disruption. The closure will kick off around 8:30 a.m. and is expected to wrap up by 4:30 p.m.. If you commute that way, prepare for some delays!

Traffic Slowdowns Ahead

That’s not all, though! Motorists should also brace themselves for potential slowdowns on I-65. On Friday morning, a rolling roadblock will be in effect at the southbound exit 40 starting at 8:45 a.m. This is part of necessary pothole repairs in the area. So if you’ve got somewhere to be, consider leaving a bit earlier to avoid being stuck!

Flooding Woes

Basil Griffin Park was flooded as of last Monday, February 17, with road crews working diligently to move truckloads of stones into the Weather Stone subdivision to keep access open for residents and emergency services.

It’s a tough time for many, as flooding has led to significant road closures across the region. Right now, there are nine closures in Warren County, eight in Logan County, and a whopping thirteen in Simpson County. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is strongly advising motorists not to drive around or move barricades on flooded roads. Unfortunately, numerous reports of this behavior have resulted in dangerous situations, including several water rescues.

Devastating Consequences

Tragically, flooding has had serious consequences, including confirmed deaths in Hart County after a mother and her young child were swept away in their vehicle. The National Weather Service has indicated that Drakes Creek crested at a staggering 35.9 feet and the Barren River hit 39.1 feet, both well above flood stage. The flood stage for the Barren River in Bowling Green is set at 28 feet, putting the recent levels in stark perspective when compared to historic crests.

This past weekend, residents saw rain totals reach between 4.88 and 6.42 inches across Warren, Simpson, and Allen counties, adding fuel to the flooding fire. To make matters more complicated, there’s a winter storm watch in effect, predicting snow accumulations of anywhere between 2 to 6 inches from Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening. Sounds like a recipe for chaos!

State Assistance

In response to the flooding, help is on the way from the Indiana and Tennessee National Guard members who are lending their resources to state efforts. While attempting water rescues, two National Guard trucks were reportedly caught in floodwaters, though thankfully, the guardsmen were rescued safely.

Staying Safe

Oh, and just a quick heads up about the roads: A single-vehicle accident happened on I-65 around 5 p.m. involving a flipped trailer. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, but traffic backups were noted.

As the weather continues to change, emergency agencies are encouraging residents to stay updated on both potential snowfall and the ongoing flooding conditions. So make sure to keep an eye on the latest updates and stay safe out there!
