Community Comes Together to Celebrate Generous Couple in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — This past Sunday, the community of Bowling Green gathered to honor a beloved couple known for their unwavering commitment to helping others. Johnny and Jenny Burton, whose dedication to service has touched many lives, celebrated Jenny’s 80th birthday at the First Baptist Church, surrounded by friends and family.
A Legacy of Community Service
Since retiring, Jenny Burton has been a pillar of support in her community. After ending her nursing career in 2015, she and her husband decided to devote their time to volunteering. “I love people, and I just want to be able to help them do whatever they need,” Jenny shared. “Then when [Johnny] retired, he came and joined me to be a volunteer at the hospital.” Together, they have taken on various roles, including delivering Meals on Wheels and participating in a program called Helping Hands, where they provide food assistance to those in need.
Their tireless efforts and compassionate spirits have made them a beloved presence both at the church and in the wider community. Community member Allen Costellow remarked, “They truly love people; they truly want to be servants and help people, and you don’t see that with everyone.” He fondly recalled that if he ever needed help in the middle of the night, the Burtons would be among the few he could count on.
Surprise Celebration for an Unassuming Hero
As Jenny’s milestone birthday approached, Allen and his wife Glenda decided it was time to show her just how appreciated she is. “She’s one of those people who thinks she doesn’t matter, and I want to show her she matters a lot,” Glenda explained. Even when they informed Jenny about the celebration, she remained skeptical, thinking that nobody would come. However, upon arriving at the church, she was greeted with warmth and love from the community.
“I’ve never had this before, never had anybody do this before. It’s overwhelming, almost, because my grandchildren are here from Texas,” Jenny expressed with gratitude. Jenny’s family members traveled from various states to attend the event, including her daughter-in-law and three granddaughters.
Spreading Love and Kindness
When asked about their extensive volunteer work, Jenny shared her belief in demonstrating the values of being good Christians. Alongside her work with Meals on Wheels, Jenny also creates prayer shawls and teaches crocheting and basket weavings at the church. Meanwhile, Johnny lends his skills to help maintain the church and assist members of the congregation with furniture and lawn repairs.
A Heartfelt Community Bond
The gathering this past Sunday highlighted the profound impact that the Burtons have made in Bowling Green, showing that acts of kindness and community spirit are truly what make a difference.
