Bowling Green, KY – Western Kentucky University (WKU) is going through several changes and initiatives as the new academic year approaches. Recent meetings and resolutions passed by the Student Government Association (SGA) have highlighted efforts to engage students in fundraising and community involvement.
During a recent weekly SGA meeting, two significant resolutions were passed aimed at initiating fundraising for the Potter Children’s Home located in Bowling Green. The first resolution, known as Resolution 1-24-F, allows the SGA to hold a series of four fundraisers throughout the semester, with a goal of raising $2,000 for the home’s holiday expenses.
According to SGA member Jade Ismail, the aim of these events is to not only engage students on campus but also connect them with organizations outside of WKU. To facilitate donations, each event will have a QR code directing attendees to a GoFundMe page where they can contribute directly.
The first of these fundraising events is titled Soarin’ in September and is scheduled to take place at Jump Air Zone on Wednesday, September 25, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. For a $10 entry fee, WKU students will be able to enjoy two hours of access to the trampoline park, along with socks provided for jumping. Participants will need to sign a safety and liability waiver to join in the fun.
During the fundraiser, 40% of all proceeds will be contributed to the Potter Children’s Home Fund. SGA senator Sophia Bryant expressed her enthusiasm about this initiative, highlighting the importance of reaching out across campus for a positive cause.
Both resolutions related to the fundraising efforts were passed unanimously, indicating strong support among the SGA members. Furthermore, Caroline Yates was appointed and sworn in as a member of the Graduate Advisory Council during the meeting.
Chief Justice Ellen Henderson provided an update on the Fall 2024 elections, set to occur on September 26 and 27 on TopNet. The elections will include positions for freshman senator, Gatton Academy senator, international senator, and a graduate senator. Currently, there are 20 candidates running for the freshman senator role.
In addition to the fundraising activities, WKU is also experiencing some administrative changes, including a restructured Division of Enrollment and Student Experience. The university community has been made aware of some financial **overspending** as addressed by Caboni at a recent Staff Senate meeting concerning the academic year 2023-2024.
Moreover, the WKU Outdoor Recreation Adventure Center has closed indefinitely, although specific reasons for the closure have not yet been released to the public. This unexpected change has raised questions among students, particularly those who used the center for its various outdoor activities.
As WKU navigates these shifts, the focus on community engagement and support for local organizations like Potter Children’s Home remains a priority. Students are encouraged to participate in the upcoming events and make positive contributions during this semester.
