Bowling Green Hosts Back-to-School Luau & STEAM Night

Bowling Green Welcomes Back-to-School Luau & STEAM Night

Published: July 29, 2024

It was a vibrant evening full of fun educational activities in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Bowling Green Parks and Recreation (BGPR) teamed up with the Warren County Public Library (WCPL) to kick off a lively Back to School Luau and STEAM Night at the popular Russell Sims Aquatics Center.

This entertaining end-of-summer bash was all about getting the kids, along with their families, ready for the new school term, in a playful and exciting ambiance.

As explained by the BGPR Recreation Division Manager, Cameron Levis, the event was meant to be a blend of fun and learning, primarily through STEAM-based activities. For those who are unfamiliar, STEAM is an acronym standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. These elements serve as the basis for a broad field of study that encourages kids to dive into a pool of knowledge and discover new concepts.

This lively event was bustling with a myriad of activities like a zesty cannonball competition, intuitive boat building, and much more. Levis teased that there might even be a tie-dye activity happening right on the pool deck. The Public Library had also arranged for Dino bones for kids, allowing them to assemble, discover and learn about these prehistoric creatures in an engaging and interactive manner.

Spicing up the evening, there were fun games planned around the pool. Levis mentioned some highlighted features like their zero-depth pool. Owing to installations such as dumping buckets and rubber duck races down the slides, the place was brimming with laughter, littered with surprises, and loaded with learning opportunities.

One of the noteworthy things about the Luau and STEAM Night was that the event was open to the public, absolutely free of charge. Although, the organizers urged everyone to bring along school supplies of any kind, serving as a donation. As Levis stressed, this initiative aimed to give back to the community and support those who might struggle to acquire essential school supplies.

Levis also reassured that any donated supplies would be directed towards local schools or partner organizations in need. He stressed that the collected goods would be distributed appropriately, making sure that they serve the kids that need them the most.

The Back to School Luau & STEAM Night was a delightful experience for folks in Bowling Green. The event just didn’t only mark the end of summer but also welcomed the new school term with a lot of cheer and warmth, setting the tone right for the learning journey ahead.

Remember, every new term brings in new opportunities to learn and to grow. And as they say at the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation, “learning is fun when fun is in learning“.
