BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – An ambitious group of college students from Western Kentucky University (WKU) pedaled into their home town of Bowling Green on a mission to raise $150,000 for Alzheimer’s research. Known as Bike4ALZ, the team of dozen dedicated students, dubbed Team 12, has been cycling across America since May to raise funds and awareness for those battling Alzheimer’s.

The Journey So Far

The Bike4ALZ journey began on the West Coast, in San Francisco, and has made its way through states including Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois before arriving in Bowling Green. Following their stop in Bowling Green, the team’s endpoint is marked for Virginia Beach, Virginia, scheduled for July 28th.

Motivation Behind the Journey

According to member Tanner Blood, each member of the team has a personal motivation driving their grueling journey. “Everybody on this team has a why… and even if it’s not a complete personal connection like I have with my grandma, there are so many people out there affected by this disease and all the forms of it,” said Blood. He also mentioned that the team members ride for each other and for everyone affected, using the shared purpose to propel them through early morning starts and extreme heat across the country.

Bike4ALZ Event in Bowling Green

Funds raised from this endeavor will go towards Alzheimer’s research. To help achieve their fundraising goal, Team 12 will be hosting a special event at SOKY Marketplace in Bowling Green on Tuesday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The three-hour event will offer citizens the opportunity to donate to the cause and provide moral support to these energetic students and their important cause.

A Final Push Towards the Goal

With their current fundraising total still a bit shy of the $150,000 target, Team 12 hopes the event will provide the final push towards reaching their ambitious goal. The team remains optimistic and committed to their mission, remembering the numerous individuals affected by Alzheimer’s they’re riding for and those across the country that have already given their support.

Their month-long journey across America from coast to coast exhibits an unfaltering commitment to a cause that is personal to each of them, and to the millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s, providing a valuable testament to the difference small groups of devoted individuals can make when they come together for a cause.
