Bowling Green Municipal Utilities (BGMU) is stepping up to provide assistance in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The utility company has dispatched crews to help with restoration efforts in the southeastern United States, where the hurricane has caused significant damage and disruption.
As of Thursday, two BGMU crews are on their way to affected areas. One crew, consisting of six dedicated employees, traveled to Marietta, Georgia, to assist with storm restoration efforts. This crew has now rerouted towards East Tennessee to continue their work in helping restore power. A second crew, made up of five linemen, is preparing to head to Johnson City on Saturday morning, targeting areas particularly hard-hit by flooding.
Speaking with BGMU staff, it becomes clear that the motivation behind this effort extends beyond just duty; it is about supporting fellow communities in their time of need. “Mutual aid is very important for all utility companies,” says marketing coordinator Shelley Lowe. “You never know when you’re going to be impacted by a natural disaster. So it’s important for us to be part of that and to help other communities when we can.”
This sentiment highlights the sense of community that exists among utility companies. All across the nation, there is a recognition that a united effort in times of crisis can speed up recovery and provide much-needed relief.
Upon arrival at their destinations, BGMU crews will face long hours as they work around the clock to restore power. According to Lowe, teams can expect to work between 12 and 16 hours a day as they tackle the challenges presented by storm damage and flooding. This dedication not only benefits the affected areas but also serves as a testament to the commitment of these employees to their profession and community.
Lowe expressed gratitude toward the crew members for their hard work and willingness to help those not just in Bowling Green, but also in the wider region. “We thank our crew members for being customer focused and being so willing to help others,” she stated. Their selflessness is commendable, showing that during tough times, people can come together to lift each other up.
As the crews embark on their journey, there is a shared hope for their safe return home after their mission concludes. The restoration efforts will be arduous, but the primary concern is ensuring the safety of the workers and those they serve.
In conclusion, BGMU is playing a vital role in the recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. By sending crews to areas in need, they exemplify the spirit of helping one another during difficult times. As residents affected by the hurricane begin to recover, the combined efforts of utility companies like BGMU will surely assist in the restoration of normalcy, bringing power back to communities and hope to individuals facing challenges ahead.
