The Southern Queen first opened its doors in 1906, offering a welcoming place for Black travelers who were often turned away from whites-only establishments. This historic site even earned its place in the famous “Green Book,” which guided Black Americans to safe lodging and eateries during their travels. Back in 2022, the city purchased the Southern Queen and some surrounding properties for a whopping $248,500 from the Moses family. These buildings had fallen into disrepair over the years, leading city officials to attempt to secure a buyer who would take on the challenge of preservation. Fast-forward to 2023, and local developer Desmond Bell stepped up to the plate, buying the property for just $1 under the agreement that he would restore this vital piece of local history.

Unexpected Developments

Bell cited extensive damage as the reason behind his drastic measures, stating, “I had to remove it all, because I got to make sure it’s safe.” No one expected this extent of demolition!

Brent Childers, the director of Neighborhood and Community Services, shared that while some demolition was anticipated during the renovation process, the scale of destruction was shocking. “I was not expecting to have to see this much removal of the structure,” Childers explained, highlighting that historic structures often have their surprises hidden beneath the surface.

Facing the Challenges

Restoration is a tough job, especially with years of neglect before Bell took on the task. Fire damage and termite infestations had left the Southern Queen in a perilous state. It seems that under that worn-out roof lay more problems than anyone could have imagined. Bell mentioned that they found charred walls indicating a fire had impacted the building long before it entered the renovation phase.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! Plans are still in place to rebuild the second floor and roof, and Bell hopes to display historic artifacts throughout the venue when it’s all finished. “I knew it was gonna be a tough task,” Bell reflected. As the city plays its part in ensuring that the Southern Queen is returned to its former glory, public information officer Deborah Highland-West reassured everyone that there’s communication about the project’s status. “The city looks forward to the restoration of the Southern Queen,” she said optimistically.

Additionally, the Landmark Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving local history, commented on the situation, encouraging the community to advocate for the protection of not just the Southern Queen but all historic buildings in Bowling Green. “Good things can come out of a bad situation,” their statement read, emphasizing the need for proper maintenance to save our treasured sites.

The Southern Queen once hosted a slew of famous Black entertainers, from James Brown to Tina Turner, and with the right community support, it may one day welcome visitors once again, proud of its history and vibrant future ahead!
