Bowling Green Kids Shape Future Park Design

Bowling Green Engages Kids in Creative Park Design

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The city of Bowling Green is taking an innovative approach in planning its new downtown park by inviting elementary school students to design concept plans. This unique idea aims for the kids’ visions and creativity to shape the future of the Riverfront Park Project, reflecting the community’s needs and desires.

Understanding Kids’ Perspectives

Jim Weinberg, the marketing director for the Riverfront Park Project, expressed the importance of incorporating children’s ideas. “Seeing the creative work of these children, the way they see shapes and colors and all different activities, there is a certain sincerity and honesty about it,” he said. “That is so great to bring that out to the community.” As an artist himself, Weinberg finds great value in letting the kids envision their thoughts on the park. Their drawings may very well influence the final design.

One student’s drawing stood out, illustrating a parking lot. When asked about it, Weinberg remarked, “Well, we’re going to need parking. Great idea.” Such practical thoughts from young minds highlight their understanding of real-world needs.

Students Excited About Their Involvement

The project seems to have inspired the children, particularly a student named Aria. “I’ve always wanted to do this, so today is actually my lucky day,” she said. Her excitement reflects a sentiment shared by many students who feel honored to contribute to such a significant community initiative.

Overview of the Riverfront Park Project

The Riverfront Park Project will be located at the Historic College Street Pedestrian Bridge. The new park will feature various amenities, including an unloading station for boats, facilities for kayaking and tubing, and a playground for children. The entire project is anticipated to cost around $51 million.

Funding and Future Plans

Brett Childers, the director of neighborhood and community services for Bowling Green, shared promising news regarding funding. “Just in federal grant funding, we’re over $4 million. The city has committed another $4.5 to $5 million, so we have funds moving forward,” he stated. The city plans to continue pursuing additional grant funding as the project progresses through several phases. The initial phase of construction is set to begin in 2025.

Community and City Collaboration

This collaborative effort not only taps into the creativity of young students but also strives to strengthen community ties. By involving children in the design process, Bowling Green hopes to create a park that resonates with its residents while also catering to their recreational needs.

As the project takes shape over the next few years, it is clear that the input from the younger generation will play a significant role in defining the essence of the Riverfront Park. It is heartening to see a community place value on the voices of its children, paving the way for a fun and engaging space for all.
